Anyone objectively looking at the A.L. West knows it is going to be a two-team race this season. Those two teams meet for the first time this season at Safeco Field this weekend but Angels right-hander John Lackey shrugged off the importance of any division ’showdown’ in April.
“It’s too early to tell,” Lackey said. “Let’s get 50 (games) in and see where everybody is.”
The Mariners (and manager John McLaren) have chosen not to wait that long. The Mariners have made it plain they think it’s important to measure themselves against the Angels (winners of three division titles in the past four years and 13 of 19 head-to-head meetings last season) — even bringing it up when the teams met during spring training.
“If you feel you gotta make a statement in spring training ….” Lackey said to that this afternoon, leaving his own statement hanging with obvious disdain.
Tonight’s lineup:
3B Chone Figgins
LF Gary Matthews Jr.
RF Vladimir Guerrero
DH Garret Anderson
CF Torii Hunter
1B Casey Kotchman
2B Maicer Izturis
C Jeff Mathis
SS Erick Aybar
RHP Jered Weaver
I was going to complain about Mathis in the lineup instead of more powerdful Napoli but he hit a homer. I guess that won’t work since it’s a 1-1 tie. I sure hope Izturis wakes up soon though. Having three weak hitters together like this isn’t going to make for many tough innings. He needs to start getting big hits already. If he doesn’t hit better than Aybar the shortstop job might as well go to Aybar now.
Mike Scioscia gets an F- tonight for pitcher management. Way to blow the game. Leave Jered in to give up the lead and then two more runs. He didn’t have much in the 6th. Why wait so long to pull him?
This ump is complete rubbish though. Horrible strikezone. Please tell the Angels hitters that so Vlad will stop hacking at garbage. We need a lot of big at-bats now to get Felixout and beat their bullpen.
Wow, is O’Day going to walk everyone too?
Please ask Scioscia to bench Matthews the rest of the Mariners series. What a horrible job he’s doing. He had a homer but other than that he’s been bad. He could have tied the game in the 8th but no, he wanted to be the hero. Patience.
And he doesn’t belong in the two spot of the lineup. Does he ever so anything in the first inning?
I hear the Salt Lake team is 8-0. That must be some bullpen. Can the Angels send their bullpen to them and steal theirs? This bullpen is garbage. Bootcheck, get off the DL now. Nick Adenhart, get to Seattle and join the Angels. Dustin Moseley, you’re back in the bullpen. Their, I solved the Angels’ bullpen problem.
