The A’s lineup is loaded with left-handed hitters, and when making a pitching change with runners at second and third and no outs in the seventh inning, Manager Mike Scioscia understandably went to left-hander Darren Oliver. The old left-on-left deal. But was it the right move?
The A’s did have two left-handed hitters due up in Jack Cust and Eric Chavez. But Oliver has not had a great deal of success against left-handed hitters this season.
They are hitting .321 (17 for 53).
Oliver did get Cust on a ground ball, but Chavez singled to right field, driving in two runs to give the A’s a 4-1 lead.
