ERVIN SANTANA (10-3, 3.53)
Bad starts should not pile up on the Angels’ rotation, given the strength of their five starting pitchers. Santana has a chance to prove why against the A’s, a team he has dominated throughout his career. Following poor starts by John Lackey and Jon Garland, Santana will take his 8-1 career record against the A’s to the mound a McAfee Coliseum. The All-Star right-hander will be making his fourth start against Oakland this season and he is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.80, having allowed only four earned runs in 20 innings. The two no-decisions came in games in which he allowed two earned runs in seven innings and two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. The Angels will need him to work deep into the game, given the workload for the bullpen the past few days.

DANA EVELAND (7-5, 3.50)
The A’s left-hander will be making his third start against the Angels, the first two getting progressively better but still unsuccessful. After allowing seven hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 6-1 loss at Angel Stadium on April 30, Eveland came back and allowed four hits and three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in Anaheim on July 2, taking a no-decision in a 7-4 Angels’ victory. He does get the Angels at home this time, and he has been much better at the Coliseum, going 5-2 with an ERA of 3.03 compared to 2-3 with an ERA of 4.14 on the road. Walks have been a problem – but not against the free-swinging Angels, of course. He has issued 51 walks, fourth most in the American League, but only three to the Angels.

Napoli: 0 for 1, .000; 0 HR, 0 RBI
This lineup is a joke. Does Mike Scioscia know nothing about offense? Come on, this batting order is horrible. It shows me a manager who knows nothing about his players. Maicer Izturis is one of our best clutch hitters with RISP. How many at-bats will he get tonight to bat with RISP with the guys at the bottom of the order? I see none. So what I see is an automatic four bad hitters at 1, 7, 8 and 9. Izturis just isn’t as good with nobody on base. He’s better with RISP. He’s even not that good with a runner on first.
And why does Casey need another night off? Come on, he’s a kid. He doesn’t need the rest so stop with that lame excuse we always hear. I don’t see any rest escuse for Howie. Casey is the best hitter on this team against lefties. Let him play.
This looks like the B team to me. Even Vlad is no help.
Back to the bench Matthews, you stink. First a rally killing at-bat and then a strikeout. The offense had something good going in the 1st and Matthews killed it. Now I see pretty much nothing from these guys. I thought after his benching he’d have something to prove but I guess not.
What a dumb at-bat from Aybar. He’s hanging around Vlad way too much. stop it. You have bases loaded and a 1-0 count and you hit back to the pitcher. This is what’s wrong with this offense. Stupid at-bats.
Mike Scioscia is doing a great job of killing the offense. they did great in texas so now he changes everything. I can see Figgins but nobody else. I hate this garbage about lefty pitcher lineups. Just play the best hitters. A good hitter can hit either type of pitcher. All season this offense has been horrible and it’s because the lineup is never the same and hiters never know where they’ll hit. Knock it off.
Matthews sure looks like a player who wants more playing time. A rally killing groundout and two strikeouts. This guy just has no clue. It’s like he can’t even see. Maybe he needs glasses.
Thanks for that nice DP Quinlan. And why exactly is Casey off tonight? This lineup is a joke. Casey is the better hitter against lefties and righties. This game really stinks. We lead 2-0 but it feels like every inning we’re about to give up the lead. The A’s seem like they’re all having better at-bats and Santana has to work harder to get the outs.
Time to move Torii Hunter from behind Vlad. What a joke that at-bat was he had in the 6th. Howie or Juan would be better protection. Eventually it should be Juan Rivera. Torii Hunter is just way too much of a hacker. He’s almost as bad as Vlad. I think the lineup should be
Figgins
Aybar
Vlad
Rivera
Kendrick
Kotchman
Anderson
Hunter
Mathis
I guess I should say the lineup should have Aybar or Izturis second. But I’d prefer Izturis batting somewhere further down the lineup. He could do well second though if runners get on ahead of him. He needs to bat more with RISP.
Oh no. We get a 3-0 lead and Santana is forgetting how to pitch. Don’t lose now to the AAA’s Ervin.
Amazing job by Santana in the 7th. Now why can’t Garland do that to the AAA’s? We aren’t talking about a lineup of major league sluggers. Come on garland, they aren’t the A’s of the past. They’re a minor league team mostly. At least Santana is showing why he’s an All-Star this year.
Mattews is 0 for 4 with a rally killing groundout, two strikeouts and a flyout. Yep, he sure wants to play.
I thought the only reason Casey doesn’t play is he needs a rest yet he came into the game in the 8th. How will he ever get a rest if he has to play? Come on Scioscia, give the kid a break. He needs his Z’s.
Looks like we got the bad Scot Shields tonight. He doesn’t look sharp at all. Get K-rod in the game. Or how about Arredondo?
How dumb are the A’s? They pitched to Vlad after Aybar stole second and of course he drove him in. Then Hunter comes up and again grounds into a stupid DP. At least we got K-Rod an insurance run. I think someone should have a long talk with Torii. He isn’t cutting it hitting behind Vlad. This is why Vlad is struggling probably. Pitchers can throw Vlad junk because if he gets lucky and hits it or walks no big deal. Just a single. Torii will get both of them out.
