This summer marks the 20th anniversary of the release of “Bull Durham,” the movie many argue is the best about baseball and one of the top sports flicks ever.
We easily could just issue our list anointing the OCRegister.com choice as the No. 1 baseball movie and round out a top 10, and we still will do that. But we want to know what you think.
Is a Kevin Costner movie worthy of the distinction, or are you a traditionalist who thinks Gary Cooper’s brilliance can’t be topped? Do you like the sappy movies or the documentaries? Or do you just want to laugh?
Here’s your chance to let us know. The first round of voting will last until 5 p.m. Tuesday, or just before the All-Star Game begins. The second round will begin Wednesday morning.
Along with your votes, be sure to leave your comments about your favorites and, of course, our glaring omissions from this 16-movie field.
Click on the following matchups to cast your votes (winner of each matchup moves on to face winner of the paired matchup in the second roundĀ … only way “Bull Durham” would face “Field of Dreams” would be in the finals):
“Bull Durham” vs. “For Love of the Game”
“The Rookie” vs. “A League of Their Own”
“Major League” vs. “Sandlot”
“Bang The Drum Slowly” vs. Ken Burns’ “Baseball”
“Pride of the Yankees” vs. “When It Was A Game”
“The Natural” vs. “61*”
“Eight Men Out” vs. “The Bad News Bears” (original version)
“Field of Dreams” vs. “Soul of the Game”
I’m not sure how this poll works. Am I supposed to choose between each of these movies, thereby eliminating the other? I think Bull Durham and For The Love of The Game are both in the top 5. If I choose one will I be eliminating the other?
For what it’s worth the only movies that I would eliminate would be:
The Natural; far too much back story and mystery and too much Glenn Close. Bang the Drum Slowly, Ken Burns ‘Baseball’, Pride of the Yankees and When it Was a Game, because I’ve never seen them or saw them so long ago that I don’t remember them well enough to include them in my vote.
The rest could all be anywhere in the top ten. “Eight Men Out” could have been my first choice right after the White Sox won the world series. Major League…….if the Indians ever GET to the World Series. Sandlot is a timeless classic, as is A League of Their Own…….and so on.
I think you should put together a poll where the movies are all listed and the reader can number them in order of their favorites, and add their own choice if it isn’t on the list.
That would be a great poll.
Thank you.
All I am going to say is that if I were to assemble a fantasy team, Tanner would be first on my list — go Bears!
How can an Angels blog not have “Angels in the Outfield?”
Because it was horrible?
I agree with Dan. This thing is flawed. First off “Baseball” by Ken Burns is hardly a baseball movie. And I wouldn’t even throw “When It Was a Game” in there either. Both are documentaries and were never released in movie theaters.
As for the matchups, putting “61*” against “The Natural” is brutal as is “The Rookie” against “A League of Their Own.”
But the biggest problem is the omission of “Bingo Long and the Traveling All Stars,” “The Scout” and “The Stratton Story.”
