Any Angels-Red Sox debate that invokes the name Gene Mauch is coming from a somewhat distant place.
Specifically, a million years ago, when dinosaurs like the Los Angeles Raiders still roamed Earth.
Arguing in favor of the Red Sox based on Mauch is like arguing in favor of water softening agents based on Calgon. A little dated, you know.
To his credit, Dan Shaughnessy does point out the irrelevance of the 1986 postseason when discussing today. But beyond that, I’m not going to give him a lot of credit.
Because of their pitching, the Angels do match up with the Red Sox, particularly when Boston is playing with one David Ortiz tied behind its back. (Yes, that’s about to change, I understand.)
But you know what they say, pitching and defense wins championships, and they’re always right. These Angels can pitch it and catch it, even if Vladimir Guerrero occasionally appears to be equipped with a fielding spatula.
So, Danny boy, you’re 100-percent correct. See you in October. I’ll be sure to point out then which team is the Angels, since you and your dated perspective won’t recognize them.

pitching and defense alones wins nothing
if the angels dont score any runs like last post-season, it will be a sweep no matter how they pitch.
and in 2002 the Angels pitching was at best average, they won with offense timely hitting and a great bullpen.
I dont know why so many people hang onto the pitching and defense cliche in baseball. Oakland has the best pitching in the Al and they wont even make the post-season.
