Just what will market be for K-Rod?

Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez turned down a three-year contract offer from the Angels last fall — in part because he wants a longer deal. The Angels, for their part, don’t want to offer more than a three-year deal to a pitcher whose aggressive delivery has been thought by many to be an inevitable injury risk.

Rodriguez has toned down that delivery somewhat this season — as a means to lessen the chronic ankle sprains he had been dealing with. But it has also cost him a little velocity. Both his speed and his strikeouts are down this season even as he guns for the single-season saves record.

This article by Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com indicates that the Angels aren’t the only ones who have noticed and look at the 26-year-old Rodriguez’s long-term value with some wariness. It could make it a little difficult for Rodriguez to get the contract he dreams of this off-season when he will be shooting to match or surpass future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera as the highest-paid reliever in baseball history.

The Angels have many other more important places to direct that money. Entirely too much money to pay for a 3 out pitcher who makes everyone nervous.

Breaking News: Jose Arredondo will be the next Angel closer (for much less $$$).

  • Brett says:

No surprise there. As good as Frankie has been no closer is worth what he’s going to ask for. That money needs to go towards keeping Teixeira who is in his prime right now and tearing the cover off the baseball

  • David Rojas says:

Right now, the Angels need to sign Teixeria, Lackey and Guerrero to long term contracts. They’re more important to the team. Every Frankie outing is nerve wracking.

It appears that every Angel fan that takes the initiative to post something on the internet, and in blogs somewhere, has the same opinion………..Rodriguez drives you crazy. Doesn’t have incredible heat (seems to clock out at 92), the 2002 screwball isn’t what it used to be, gets whacked around a little bit too much for a closer, and doesn’t have the ability to come into a game, and get three straight outs to close out the game. “Every game a journey,” with Frankie. Frankie, i’m sorry, but Arredondo’s fast-ball clocks at 95, he’s got great movement on the ball, and he’ll have another year of experience under his belt. Put Jose into the 8th-or-9th hole w/Shields, and by ALL means, keep that .400-hitting vacuum cleaner-1st baseman that you stole from Atlanta. Teixiera MUST be signed, PERIOD….

Frankie is a bit too, shall we say, “unpredictable” when called upon to close out a game. It has all been said before. If it wasn’t for the Angels’ batters getting a few go-ahead runs on the board, Frankie would have not much work to do, and therefore would be nowhere near a 50+ save season. Another team will probably pick up Frankie at a ‘ridiculous’ price.
The question is: will Frankie ever have another 50+ save season without the clutch hits that the Angels have put on the scoreboard in 2008? I may be wrong, but I doubt it. And Frankie may go down in MLB history as one of the most overpaid Closers because he failed to repeat past successes.
