Players’ choice — walk-up music of Angels

August 28th, 2008, 9:30 am · 2 Comments · posted by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira describes himself as “a classic-rock guy” when it comes to music. So for most of his career with the Rangers, he requested Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” as his ‘walk-up music.

When he went to Atlanta last year, Teixeira said he alternated between Hendrix and Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock.” Since his trade to the Angels, Teixeira has stuck with the hair-band classic.

Each spring, the Angels spend a day posing for photos and video hits that will play on the stadium scoreboard during the season. At the same time, players are asked by the Angels’ entertainment division if they have a preferred ‘walk-up’ song.

Some players don’t. Most do. Some will request a song by name and/or artist/ Some will even submit a CD on which they’ve burned their track of choice (making it hard to be identified now). A few years back, Angels closer Troy Percival strode in from the bullpen to the sounds of ‘Sandfrog’ — teammate Scott Spiezio’s garage band.

Some players will change their music based on how things are going on the field (who said ballplayers are superstitious?). Angels reliever Justin Speier recently asked that his music be changed to “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice.

Glad to see you read the message boards on angelsbaseball.com. Can you do some actual work and find out what Guerrero’s song is? The genre is Merengue that’s all I know.
