David Eckstein still is with Toronto, but General Manager Tony Reagins continued to work deals to add a veteran middle infielder to the Angels - a glaring need with Maicer Izturis out for the season, Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and Erick Aybar sidelined with a strained left hamstring.
”There’s nothing at this time, but things change and they can change quickly,” Reagins said, who said his preference would be to add a piece before post-season rosters are set at midnight Aug. 31.
Eckstein, the former Angel and fan favorite, is a fit to return for a number of reasons.
The Angels are looking for someone who has come versatility and can play on both sides of second base, at shortstop and a second, and is in the final weeks of a one-year contract with the Blue Jays.
Toronto also has Marco Scutaro and John McDonald in a deep middle infield mix, but both are signed through the 2009 season, though the contracts are not exhorbitant. McDonald is to be paid $1.9 million next season and Scutaro is due $1.1 million.
