It’s official. Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez, who is days away from setting the single-season saves record is going to wind up on some AL MVP ballots.
Some baseball writers have already tipped their hands as two who they will pick as the 2008 American League MVP. Rodriguez would have to pick up enough votes to win the award and he’s got plenty of competition in that area.
The Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers announced his selections this week, though that could change since there are still a few weeks left in the regular season.
“I was asked for my top three MVP picks on Friday and surprised myself with this answer – AL: 1) Francisco Rodriguez, 2) Carlos Quentin, 3) Dustin Pedroia…” wrote Rogers.
Boston Globe baseball writer Nick Cafardo took his MVP prognostication a bit further by asking several writers from across the country for their picks.
Cafardo writes, “From the 12 respondents, Quentin and Minnesota’s Justin Morneau both received four votes. Pedroia received two, while Frankie Rodriguez and Joe Mauer each received one. Morneau also received four second-place votes, Quentin two and Pedroia two.”
