The Yankees arrive in Anaheim today for a three-game series headed to elimination from the American League East race (the Rays’ magic number to eliminate them is 11) and going nowhere in the wild-card chase (they trail the Red Sox by 8 1/2 games).
They aren’t likely to find much sympathy — or much help — for their cause at Angel Stadium this week. The Angels have beaten the Yankees five of seven times this season and 26 of the past 40 meetings. That includes 12 Angels’ victories in the Yankees’ past 16 games in Anaheim.
If the Yankees fail to make the playoffs, it will bring a premature end to Yankee Stadium’s final season and leave baseball with a Yankee-free post-season for the first time since 1993.
