Guerrero sets franchise record

vlad-swings.jpgWithout any fanfare or ceremony, Vladimir Guerrero quietly stamped his name on a portion of the Angels’ record book Monday night.

When Guerrero bounced into a 6-4-3 double play in the fourth inning against Yankees right-hander Carl Pavano, it was the 27th double play Guerrero has grounded into this season. That leads the American League and topped Lyman Bostock’s 30-year old franchise record by one.

The ill-fated Bostock (he was murdered in Sept. 1978) was a much-ballyhoed free agent acquistion of the Angels that season. When he got off to a slow start in April, he went to Angels owner Gene Autry and offered to give back his paychecks for the month.

I don’t think the Angels’ current owner, Arte Moreno, is expecting any such offer from Guerrero.
