Smith, Markas will team up for Angels’ post-season run

September 25th, 2008, 7:14 am · 5 Comments · posted by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

When the regular season ends Sunday, baseball’s post-season becomes the property of TBS and Fox.

The Angels’ first-round series will be televised by TBS. But if you’re looking for a little local flavor in your playoff broadcasts, Terry Smith and Rory Markas will handle the Angels’ broadcasts on KLAA/830 AM (and affiliates). The rest of the Angels’ regular-season broadcast team — Steve Physioc, Rex Hudler, Mark Gubicza and Jose Mota — could pop up on pre- and/or post-game coverage on the radio or FSN as the post-season rolls along.

Every fan in America seems to think his local team’s broadcasters fall into one of two categories. They’re either a treasured institution to be protected with all the zeal of a historic landmark (see Scully, Vin) … or they’re slightly less annoying than static, enough to make Marconi roll over in his grave.

Discuss.

The Angels have the worst announcers in baseball and are the lowest paid. As they say you get what you pay for.

  • Larry says:

Well, at least the Angels picked the right team for the radio coverage.. The other guys are ill-suited for radio.

  • Jeff says:

Rory Markus is pretty good in my opinion. Longtime Angels fans are spoiled by the memory of hearing Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale at the mic. And Bob Starr, rest his sole, was actually pretty good as well. To call Rory the worst in baseball makes me wonder whether or not David has actually listened to all the other teams’ announcers to form his opinion. I think not. And the lowest paid??? Do you work in human resources for Arte?

The Angels have some of the best announcers in baseball. If I have to Listen to the bias TBS announcers going on and on about the STUPID Boston Loser Sox and the vacation bound Old York Bankees then it will be a horrible time through October. You could mute the tv and turn on the radio but then you hear the action on the radio before you see it because of the broadcast delay.

  • Mat G. says:

This is the best off-field decision toward being a top-tier, professional franchise. Physioc is an awful, pestering announcer. Markus and Smith are a major-league tandem of quality and artistry.
