Scioscia has to go. The Angels are the new Braves. The offense stinks.
Fans are upset at a lot of things today.
Here are some of the comments posted on this blog since the Angels lost:
Jacob writes: As much as I hate to say it, but its time for Scioscia and crew to go. Its obvious he does not have the skills to take this team beyond the first round. I had decided before the season started that if the Angels lost in the first round that I wasn’t renewing season seats (and may not have because the economy is so bad), and I assume this will be the case with a lot of Angels fans.
Bye Tex. Bye Frankie.
Good Riddance Vlad, Shields, GA and Scioscia.
Time for some new blood and a different approach. When you figure out how to win in the post season, let us know.
allen.richard writes: 1-10 in his last 11 playoff games. And tries to squeeze in the go ahead run in an elimination game? On a 2-0 count, when they are obviously missing inside to prevent the squeeze. Mike doesn;t understand offense, and it’s obvious every year. Throw 2002 out the window, he is too predictable, and that team was red hot.
Ed-in-Reno writes: Red Sox fan here. The Angels played great and the series was a nail- biter. Great pitching on both sides. I don’t understand that suicide squeeze. What a momentum killer. Arte Moreno is a good owner.
Greg writes: Mike Scioscia - the reinvention of Bobby Cox
The Angels of the 2000s = the Braves of the 1990s
Good enough to take up one slot in the playoff wagon but never good enough to stay on the wagon till the end,.
It’s a very sad day in the OC
Gwen writes: Scioscia is insane, and deserves to be fired for that ridiculous decision. 100 wins doesn’t mean crap, if you can’t even get past the first round. FIRE HIM.
DM writes: I agree, Scioscia needs to go. 1st thing that even little league players learn are fundamentals like bunting, fielding, etc. What was he teaching his players all year? Why not bring in a pinch hitter rather than trying a risky suicide squeeze? Why didn’t he replace Shields in the bottom of the 9th? Do the Angels batters have to swing at so many ball 4s? BTW, Arte, Reagins, Scioscia… Lackey is NOT an ace! Halladay, Cliff Lee, Johan Santana, those are aces.
bill writes: Wow…I was interested to see what the comments would be but shocked to see these. Talk about fairweather fans!! I am a Sox fan and relieved to be moving on because I know that the Angels are an excellent team and played a series that could have gone either way. They haven’t gotten over the hump in the playoffs recently but there is a lot of things that have to bounce your way to do that. They play the game with class, pitch well, defend well and this year scored with power and finesse. The 2-0 bunt with your nine hitter who has gotten one hit all series and has no power is not a perfect call but much better chance than letting him hit away and like Sciosca said that’s how they got to this point and that’s there style. As I said before, congrats on a great season.
HaloDiva writes: The squeeze was just one of a collection of manager’s errors by the Angels. You don’t squeeze when everybody and their grandma knows it’s coming. P… But leaving in Howie Kendrick was a bigger mistake. He left 14 men on base! He was feeble at the plate. You got to get him out of there. There’s no one on the Angel bench who can play 2nd base and can at least put the ball in play? Then leaving Shields in to pitch in the 9th. Once he was in trouble…get someone out of that pen.
Patrick writes: I agree with Bob… Lackey lost to the best team. I loved reading his comments today.. I especially liked the one.. “I could throw somebody through a wall” It’s just comical and very “Little League” grow up dude!
News Flash! Angry mob forming outside Big A! Everyone hurry and join!
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU DONT WANT TO MESS WITH ANGRY ANGELS FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a pathetic series. Fire Aybar, Kendrich, Mathews and Anderson NOW!. No efforts put out by the entire club. They thought they were destined to go to the show and forgot all about the RedSox. A well deserved outcome indeed !!!
John Lackey gets my vote for the biggest poor sport in professional sports. For him to say that “the better team did not win” when he himself LOST TWICE to them in a four game series shows how much of a punk he really is. Face it Big John, you were a Big Choke. Boston is a MUCH better team, because they figure out how to win while you lose and figure out how to blame it on your teammates. Too bad your contract is not up, Lackey, because I would love to see the Angels get rid of you!!!
Boston Sucks and Mark does too! Mark we all know you are lame Todd (read previous posts on Angels and Ducks blogs) under a new user name. I thought the register kicked you out. By the way Boston is not better than the Angels, they are about even in talent. What the Angels lacked was execution. Also Lackey has reason to be mad. He pitched two stellar games and should have won. The Only reason they lost was their horrible batting. P.U. it stunk.
OC Sports fan, you are incorrect in everything you posted. You WISH the Register would kick me out, because I tell the truth and you are too insecure to accept reality. John Lackey should be mad at himself, if anyone. For someone who pitched “stellar” games, he is the only Angels pitcher with TWO losses in this four game series. Why don’t you just accept that your team CHOKED, again? Everyone else has.
angels failure+dodger success = less fans at the big A = less money = not as good a team.
GOODBYE: VLAD, K-ROD, GARLAND, AND TEIXERIA (3 FIRST ROUND PICKS RIGHT THERE AS COMPENSATION).
c-napoli (full time catcher, mathis is terrible)
1b-morales (showed something in his PH AB’s)
2b-kendrick (we hate him right now but he’s a 300 career hitter)
3b-wood (sink or swim in 2009)
ss-aybar
rf-rivera (we saw what he can do when given regular playing time)
cf-hunter (great glove, not what he signed up for but he’s rich)
lf-figgins (hate to move him again but speed is needed in the outfield)
dh-anderson (decline option and sign for a lot less)
bench-willits, matthews, mathis, rodriguez, quinlan, izturis
sp-lackey, santana, saunders, weaver, escobar if he’s ready by then (probably not), OLIVER PEREZ?
setup-arredondo

Great trade earlier in the year. OC for Garland. Garland zero pitches in the series and OC would have been a clutch bat, a player who could squeeze, a great fielder, a motivator, and would have moved Aybar to second base getting rid of a Hendrick (Who has great potential) who had a terrible series.
We want playoff proven veterans, NOT rookies or chokers in the playoffs please! Didnt howie kendrick pretty much cost us almost 3 games??? or in this case 2 games (game 2 and 4). I was at game 2 when he struck out 4 times!!!! Mike Scioscia should of said something to him or take him out of the game and let him calm his nerves down! Oh and Mike Scioscia what was he thinking with the squeeze??? Squeeze??? in the playoffs??? when your down 2-1 in a 5 game series???? hes got to be out of his mind!
The 2002 ANAHEIM Angels won the World Series. The Los Angeles Angels can’t win in the post-season. Do the math, Moreno.
Nicely done, Jimmy. At least someone gets it.
I’ve been an Angels fan since 1979, and I’m really disappointed with the “We’re the better team” whines and the choke job this year.
The Red Sox had better pitching, hitting, clutch hitting, coaching moves, execution, outfielder speed and execution(seemed like Coco Crisp and Bay caught everything sent their way or made a good throw each time).
If you’re going to lose, lose with some class and accept that the Sox were the better team.
I liked the post about turning off the sound and playing the theme song from Benny Hill in the background. That about describes how the Angels played!
FWIW. I don’t believe any team from the AL is better than the Angels as a whole, but what is the common thread to the continued losing in the postseason for the Angels? My theory is it’s playing in the AL West. Each season, the Angels last month is spent playing against the Pacific Coast League of MLB(the AL West) against teams that have expanded rosters and pitchers the A’s, Rangers, and Mariners wan’t to get some big league experience.
For the Angels to face teams from the AL East in a 5 game series who have spent their September beating each other’s brains in, it would seem a dis-advantage for the Angels bats to have to suddenly get hot and find themselves down 2 games to 0 very quickly before the bats re-adjust to front line pitching.
Just my thought as a Sox fan,
We are the new Atlanta Braves
The 2002 ANAHEIM Angels won the the Big Dance ( world series) The Los Angeles Angels of San Juan capistrano, Orange, Irvine, Santa Ana, Newport Beach. Huntington Beach, etc…Cant win in the post season. You should’nt mess with our Franchise Name wich is ANAHEIM Mr. Mereno now you have a bunch of high pay players L Mathews jr and
Jimmy, I don’t entirely agree with you on a few points. Mathis has great potential as a catcher and they need a 2nd catcher. Bench Izturis???? Are you kidding. Mighty Maicer? I think you’re wrong on that one and the same for Quinlan. They also need to fight like heck to sign Tex to a multi-year contract. Let Frankie go, he’s past his prime and not worth the big contract that he’s after.
I don’t think we have much change with Tex with Boras as his agent. His reputation is such that he’ll go for the biggest pot of gold no matter what.
Get rid of Garland, it’s bad enough we had to suffer through the “if only OC were still here this past week,” but to know that he had a terrible year makes it one of the worst trades imaginable. Is there anyone out there that didn’t think Angels management had lost their minds when hearing of that trade? Also, how much better would we have been this past week with Eckstein…………Glaus……………..the list of bad trades or unsigned options goes on and on.
To Arte and Coach Mike. Thanks for great year! We appreciate your hard work at giving us a great team this year. I’m sure you will be discussing ways to make the team better next year, and hopefully you will make some changes that will benefit the team. We look forward to reading what you’re going to do. You can bet that WE WILL BE WATCHING CLOSELY!
