Angels make procedural move with O’Day

October 21st, 2008, 5:20 pm · Post a Comment · posted by BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM

Side-arming right-hander Darren O’Day has cleared waivers and been outrighted by the Angels to the roster of the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees.

The waiver move was hardly a risk, considering O’Day is currently rehabbing a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder (he hopes to avoid surgery). O’Day was 0-1 with a 4.57 ERA in 30 appearances with the Angels while splitting his time between Triple-A and the majors last season.

The move cleared a spot on the Angels’ 40-man roster so they could protect another minor-leaguer from the Rule 5 draft in December. The lucky guy is right-hander Rafael Rodriguez who was added to the 40-man roster.

Rodriguez was 2-4 with 11 saves and a 1.86 ERA in 42 relief appearances with Double-A Arkansas last season then went 2-0 with a 6.28 ERA in nine appearances after a promotion to Triple-A.
