Joe Florkowski writes on mvn.com that, if the Angels can’t sign Mark Teixeira, then they should go after Manny Ramirez.
He even argues that Manny would be a better fit than Teixeira for the Angels.
What do you think? From Mannywood to Mannyland?
He lists four good reasons for signing Manny instead of Teixeira:
1. “If Arte Moreno were able to offer Manny Ramirez a four-year contract at about $25 million per year, that $100 million is half of what you would spend for Teixeira. At the same time, think about how much money each player can bring to the gate in terms of star power. While Mark Teixeira is a great player and definitely fills a hole the Angels need, he is simply not as charismatic or popular as Manny Ramirez with the fans.”
2. “Arte Moreno has made considerable inroads into making the Angels a region-wide team and has stolen a lot of thunder from the Dodgers in recent years. Lowering beer prices, changing the team name to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, investing in free agents, keeping ticket and parking prices reasonably low, etc. … If the Dodgers do not resign Manny Ramirez, it will be seen as one of the team’s dumbest decisions ever.
3. “Kendry Morales can play first base.”
4. “The Angels need some pop in the postseason. Even with a mostly singles attack, the Angels were in every game against the Red Sox in the ALDS. Having Manny Ramirez on board could make all of that change and change the recent postseason fortunes of the Halos.”
Sure, Manny would be a nice choice if the Angels can’t sign Teixeria, but I wouldn’t choose Manny over Mark. Manny may have more star power, but Teixeira has a work ethic and a demeanor more fitting into the “Angel way.”
His personality is better suited for the Angels.

The biggest reason to sign Manny over Teixeira is he’s a proven winner. All the teams he’s played on in Cleveland,Boston, and Los
Angeles have made it to the post season more often than not, winning it all twice in Boston.Like him or not he impacts his team more than Teixera ever has.
I’ll take Mark Texeiria any day. Unlike Manny, Mark can play a position and play it well. Manny is only a suitable DH who demands to play LF though he can’t play the position to save his life. Let K Rod go, unload Garret, say goodbye to Jon Garland unless he actually signs for what he’s really worth and trade for Matt Holliday. Angels can offer Nick Adenhart, a couple other prospects, and throw in a player or two and can get a deal done here. There’s your power hitting left fielder, a solid defensive 1B and the star power of both would overshadow the star power of Manny AND would come with much less drama. Figure these 2 guys have plenty of years left and Manny on the later end of his career and you got the makings of a WS team.
Why waste the money on either if the Angels won’t do anything in the playoffs? They could go with a bunch of kids instead and probably still win the AL West. Then lose the ALDS like this year and not spend all that money.
What if Mike decides to bench him for a day or DH a couple times a season. That’s Mike’s MO and given Manny’s age and fielding abilities…would Manny take to that?
I think Mark should be made an offer first. He sounds like he wants to stay with the Angels. It would be nice to have 30 to 40 homeruns from Manny. We need to do something with Mathews Jr. What a lot of wasted money.
Manny’s a dirtbag and has no respect for the game. Sign Tiexiera.
Manny is known to destroy clubhouses and pout. Why would you want to sign this guy for? Mark is a better all around player with no baggage and better work ethic.
Cameron makes a good point, as good as Texeria is, he did not make anyone in the Angels lineup better or more productive, especially in the post-season when it really counted. In the post-season the middle of the order hitters have to drive in runs for their teams to win- no one in recent history has been more productive than Manny.
Manny better not become an Angel. He may be able to hit but is to selfish and stuck up to be helpful. All he does is think of himself and nothing about the teammates. He walks around like he is the only worthy person on Earth to play baseball. Once Manny gets his money he will be back to his old stuck up self and not the player we saw at the end of this season.
Quoth David: “as good as Texeria is, he did not make anyone in the Angels lineup better or more productive.”
Honestly? You’re really going with that? Check out Vlad’s stats before and after the trade. You’ll find that Tex’s presense in the line-up did indeed have a strong and positive effect on the hitters around him. Not to mention the fact that he batted over .350. How does that NOT energize a line-up?
So, please, consider your words before displaying your ignorance so openly. Manny is a once-in-a-lifetime talent, but would turn on the team and start cannibalizing his young as soon as the breaks stopped going his way. Like he always does.
And to all you defeatist a-holes who are, like, “why pay big money to free agents when the team just blows it the playoffs anyway,” get lost. Go comtemplate the Great Injustice of It All. Whatever it is you do.
Scoscia puts a lot of emphasis on chemistry and Manny is in no way good for a clubhouse.
