Weekend rumors

November 30th, 2008, 9:48 pm · 17 Comments · posted by sammiller

Baseball Prospectus’ clubhouse guy, John Perotto, has a slew of rumors up, including this one on the Angels:

AL Rumors and Rumblings: The Angels are said to be willing to match the Yankees’ offer of six years and $140 million to free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia, but they will not go 10 years on a contract to re-sign first baseman Mark Teixeira, who will likely become New York’s object of affection if they don’t land Sabathia. If they are unable to retain Teixeira, the Angels will consider signing free-agent outfielder Pat Burrell, and subsequently moving him to first base.

If all the rumors are true that Sabathia prefers the West Coast, that might be the tiebreaker that sends him to the Angels. That’d be about $23 million per season; figure Burrell for somewhere in the neighborhood of $12-$15 million; and not a bad team. I always wondered why nobody ever tried to put Burrell at first. He sure can’t play left very well.

That would leave young guys on the left side of the infield, while Kendry Morales, Gary Matthews Jr.  and Sean Rodriguez probably fight for two spots in left and DH. Mix in Figgins and Izturis in utility roles. Hmmm. My gut tells me I’d rather have Teixeira in 10 years than Sabathia (or any pitcher) in six, but that’s just speculation.

[UPDATE: Could Burrell handle first? Probably.]

Which is riskier?

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

Two reasons why Pat Burrell hasn’t played first base recently: Jim Thome and Ryan Howard.

  • sammiller says:

No doubt, Earl. More I was wondering why nobody traded for him and put him at first, since until fairly recently he seemed to be pretty unpopular in Philly. But we fans tend to think trades are a lot easier to put together than they really are.

  • Andre Mouchard says:

Dumb questions: Without Burrell, wouldn’t the Angels be looking at Morales in the outfield? And isn’t Morales a converted first baseman? So if the Angels sign Burrell, wouldn’t it be easier to re-plant Morales at his original position than to play two converts?

  • sammiller says:

    Andre,
If Morales were given the full-time job, it might. But the Angels have quite a few guys who can play left, and really only Morales who can play/has been at first. So if you’re thinking of a platoon situation, or of letting Figgins play, or bring up Sean Rodriguez, or getting GMJ more at bats, you would have to clear out left field.

It’s also possible that Burrell needs to play first. He seems to do damage in left, and a conversion might be overdue. Though he actually seems to be improving out there, if not getting good.

  • Steve says:

Signing Burrell and making him a First Basemen would instantaneously put him high on the list of worst Angel free agent signings. He could Take the place of Mr. Bostock who should never have been on the list.

Here is a Novel idea sign Adam Dunn and Trade for Peavy and the Strikeouts will be a plenty in Anahiem.

  • Marlon says:

Please don’t give Burrell 12-15 mil. He is barely worth 5 mil per. We don’t need him anyway. Keep Texiera. go after Texiera. Give him the years. Lock him up now. Keep that bat in the line up for a decade. Do it Arte do it.

  • briangilespopsup says:

Pat Burrell has been one of the most consistent and consistently underrated offensive players in baseball over the course of his career. I have no idea why he gets no love.

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

Kendry Morales was a pitcher and 3B as a youth and moved to RF and 1B for Havana’s Industriales and on the Cuban national team.

  • Michael says:

Why not put Burrell in left? We’ve had to suffer from watching Garret Anderson in left for the last decade. Can Burrell really be worse than that? If Pat Burrell can dive for a ball then done…sign him up.

  • JoeCinOC says:

Earl Bloom– So why not put Kendry Morales at third? If not third, then left. But he needs a full time gig. He’s ready. I think if we offered Texeira an 8 year deal, he might take it. And then somehow get Peavy. Even if you have to trade to get him. Kendry Morales to third, trade Kendrick to Padres with Moseley to get Peavy, put Figgins on second, and Izturis at shortstop. Gary Matthews in left.

  • JoeCinOC says:

Forget Pat Burrell. Not a good move.

  • ripcurl says:

    Pat Burrell = Troy Glaus

Why would the Angels want to go down that road again? Given his superior power and better defense, Glaus is a far better alternative than Burrell, should the Angels decide to revisit that path once more.

Predictions, assumptions, and speculation, speculation, speculation……..Ahh, the week before the Winter Meetings. The greatest part, about this time of the year, is watching every writer, and media source dream-up all these “eye catching” headlines. 99% are totally false or set up. Take the Angels for example, when I saw the headline…”Is Pat Burrell coming to Anaheim?” I got a good laugh. Mr. Miller obviously doesn’t know how high the Angels are on Kendry Morales actually starting this year.

  • Craig says:

The Angles need a big impact offensive guy in their lineup besides Guerrero. There’s only two guys available that meet that bill 1). Manny Ramirez 2). Mark Teixeira with Ramirez being the most dangerous hitter in the game! And Teixeria being a better all around player then Manny and a better long term investment.

Burrell is better then average but doesn’t have the impact or consistency of Ramiresz or Tex. A nice player for a two year contract for the Angels would be Raul Ibanez. Sats wise and consistency wise he’s an ubgrade from what the Angels had in left field and have right now. He also will not break the bank and provide a nice consistent lefthanded bat. Sign Ibanez and Tex and give Kendry Morales 500 + AB’s at DH and replacement time at first base and Left & Right field. Put B. Wood at short for a whole season and you’ve got a dangerous lineup!

If you don’t sign Tex then sign Ramirez and put Morales at first and B. Wood at shortstop for a whole year and you’ve got a dangerous lineup. Might neeed to pick up a DH or pick up Raul Ibanez to share left field & DH Roles with Ramirez and company. If you pick -up Jake Peavy instead of Sabathia you can afford these moves!

Don’t forget K-Rod! The Angels are kidding themselves if they think they can replace his production with what they have in their system

  • Matt says:

    K-Rod is terrible
    Sign ManRam
    Sign Tex
    Sign Ibanez
win the damn world series ….
why not sign CC too and even Peavy
lets become the yankees of the 90’s

  • Barnettfan1 says:

Ibanez now that is a great idea. Talk about an Angel killer. Let him have a chance to hit in Anaheim Stadium all the time WOW!! CC would scare me long term because the weight issue. Pitching has not really been the down fall of this team. Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn seem like the same kind of player to me. And I hope we do not see either of them sporting the Halo this year or ever.
