Over the weekend, the New York Daily News’ Anthony McCarron documented the history of the four $100 million pitchers — the group CC Sabathia (pictured) will join, probably this month.
Kevin Brown — after a nice start — and Mike Hampton didn’t work out too well. Barry Zito seems headed for a similar disaster for the Giants (said to be one of Sabathia’s suitors).
There’s only one successful season to judge from Johan Santana, who signed a six-year, $137.5 million extension with the Mets.
The top offer for Sabathia so far is the Yankees’ reported six-year, $140 million deal. That offer might be increased when and if a West Coast team (Giants, Angels, Dodgers) makes a similar offer.
All of this should make Jake Peavy, who won’t be 28 until June, that more attractive. He will make $11 million in 2009, and signed a three-year extension through 2012 worth $52 million . There is also an option for 2013 at $22 million or a $4 million buyout. So that’s four years, $67 million (counting buyout) or five at $85 million. The catch is you have to trade major-league ready prospects to the Padres to get him.
