Dodgers manager Joe Torre, Dodger legend Maury Wills, Cubs great Ron Santo and two players with tenuous Angels ties — Vada Pinson (an Angel for two seasons, 1972-73) and Luis Tiant (who finished his career by going 2-2 in six games at age 41 for the 1982 Angels) — are among the 10 post-1942 candidates to be considered for the 2009 Hall of Fame class by the Veterans Committee.
The group also includes Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Dick Allen, Gil Hodges and Al Oliver. Career stats for all 10 candidates are available at Baseball-Reference.com. (Torre’s candidacy is based on his playing career, not his on-going career as a manager.)
The final say goes to the 64 living Hall of Famers who comprise the Veterans Committee. A player needs to receive 75 percent of the vote for election. Results will be announced next Monday on the first day of the Winter Meetings.
But what say you ….
Yes to Allen, Torre and especially Santo.
no to Torre, give me a 180 million dollar payroll and i can win too! What did he do as the manager for the Mets, Cardinals, and Braves?? Nothing! He is and never will be in the same league as Sparky Anderson, World Series titles in the American and National league, now thats managing. Torre is over rated.
dan — did you skip over this sentence?
(Torre’s candidacy is based on his playing career, not his on-going career as a manager.)
As a player, Torre was a nine-time All-Star and career .297 hitter who won the National League MVP and batting title in 1971.
