One more thing on Milton…and Teixeira

December 3rd, 2008, 12:23 pm · 6 Comments · posted by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Earl Bloom, in a previous post, had mentioned Milton Bradley as an Angel possibility, in case Mark Teixeira signs elsewhere.

I like the idea of Milton being reunited with Bill Plunkett, from Dodger days, but it also should be noted that Bradley led the American League last year in OPS, at .999. There were only two National Leaguers who broke 1.000 _ Albert Pujols and Chipper Jones.

Bradley was with Texas last year.

Teixeira’s OPS with the Angels was 1.081, in 54 games. In Atlanta he was at .902, in 103 games. Lifetime, he’s at .919.

Of Angels who were Angels all year, Big Daddy led the way at .886, which ranked 22nd in the majors and was 10 points behind the relatively unknown Nick Markakis of Baltimore.

Many people laugh at the idea of Teixeira going to Baltimore, but there are a few factors working.

He’s a diehard Baltimore guy, and a lot of his high school friends are still close to him today. And he would make the O’s a rather formidable offensive force, especially in the cozy home park, when you look at Markakis, Melvin Mora, Aubrey Huff, Brian Roberts, etc.. Plus there’s Matt Wieters, a Georgia Tech guy like Teixeira, and a catcher who was ‘08 Minor League Player of the Year.

Baltimore? Yeah, who’s going to throw the ball? Great hitters, no pitching. Enjoy your continued stay in last place and thanks for copying the Texas Rangers unsuccessful model.

    okay, we’ve entered bizarro world.
see, normally, i think the whole “clubhouse presence” thing is way overrated. you don’t. (or at least that’s my guess; you’ve mentioned clubhouse stuff a few times over the years… but maybe you don’t think it’s a big deal)
    whatever. i’m still shocked.
a post from you suggesting milton bradley might be a fine angel… ? really?
the same milton who goes after fans in the stands? the one who has worn out welcomes in montreal, cleveland, la, oakland, san diego and (after his career year) texas? the milton who is freaking, un-medicated nutso? THAT milton?
    as an angel?
even i think he’d be a drag on a team, and i’m not sure such a thing is possible.
milton’s ‘08 was un-milton-esque in a key respect — he played. .. milton has had more than 400 ABs in exactly two of his nine MLB seasons. conversely, he’s been on the DL at least 10 times.
‘08 also was a contract year.
    next year won’t be.
what’s the over/under on the number of days it’d take milton to rediscover the DL next season, wherever he plays?
i love this post, but i smell a strong wish for column fodder.

Glad to see a writer finally admitting the Orioles have a decent chance at signing Teixeira. Tex has been an Orioles fan all his life, and has said it would be a dream come true to pitch for the team he rooted for growing up. Peter Angelos has long coveted Teixeira and is prepared to break the bank for him IMO.

The Orioles also have three of the best minor league pitching prospects in baseball with Chris Tillman, Jake Arrieta and Brian Matusz and some lesser prospects behind them. The pitching will eventually be there as it is only 1 or 2 seasons away at most, and Tex can help lead the Orioles back to the playoffs when they are ready.

  • Jon says:

Whoops, meant to say “to play for the team he rooted for” not “to pitch.”

I’ll add that the Orioles also know the impact Tex would have on their fanbase as the fans need something exciting besides new uniforms to rally around. They’ve got to get attendance #’s back up and get MASN more viewership. Tex could be a huge piece of that.

  • BILL PLUNKETT, OCREGISTER.COM says:

Milton and I got along very well in LA.
But, the voices in his head might have a different opinion.

  • Craig says:

The Orioles are way off from being a playoff team with or without Tex. All Tex needs to do to get a good taste of what playing for the Orioles would be like is reflect on his time spent with the Texas Rangers. Baseball Palookaville Baby!

If he wants to cash in his chips and raise a family in Baltimore okay? But if he wants to chase pennants and get paid ‘NO’. You get paid and chase pennants with the Angels, Red Sox, and Yankees. I guess we’ll see what his priorities are?
