Fuentes: ‘Anaheim a great fit’

December 13th, 2008, 5:31 pm · 4 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Left-hander Brian Fuentes, considered the top closer remaining on the free-agent market, told his hometown paper the Angels would be a perfect fit for him.
The Merced Sun-Star’s James Burns devoted a Saturday column to Fuentes, 33, who saved 30 games for the Colorado Rockies last season.
“Anaheim would be a great fit, being a California kid,” Fuentes told Burns. “That would be my first choice.”
Fuentes also saved 30 games for Colorado in 2006 and a career-best 31 in 2005.
Contract talks with the St. Louis Cardinals have stalled, according to ESPN’s Steve Phillips, but the Washington Nationals have expressed interest in Fuentes.
With former Angel Francisco Rodriguez (Mets) and Kerry Wood (Indians) signed, Fuentes told Burns he considers himself “the last top-end closer left.”
This somehow — intentionally or otherwise — ignores all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman, 41, who had as many saves as Fuentes last season and has 554 in his career.
Hoffman, by the way, grew up in Anaheim.

I hope the Halos do not sign Fuentes. I would rather see them allocate that money to Tex, Peavy, a bat. We’ve got what we need in the pen. Maybe a run at Hoffman, Cordero, etc… to complement Shields, Arredondo, Jepsen, Speier, Oliver,…

I don’t know if we need to try and get another closer. It might cost a little too much to snag Fuentes but maybe we can get him at a hometown price.

Agree with other posts - I’d rather see us spend the money in other places and let Shields/Arredondo get a crack at it. I think spending $10m/yr on a 9th inning guy is over-rated. Stats have proven the 8th inning guy is more important than the 9th anyway. Let’s get Tex(or Manny if that fails) and another starter.

if he really likes anaheim he should take less money.
