More on Teixeira, $200 million and the Red Sox

December 15th, 2008, 2:31 pm · 7 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Did the Boston Red Sox offer Mark Teixeira $200 million for eight years? My answer: What time is it?
Let’s revisit my morning post prompted by Dan Patrick’s comments on his AM 570 morning show.
This is a blog. There are comments made on the internet, the radio, television. We mention them, link to them, perhaps comment on them ourselves. It’s a discussion, people.
First of all, if it was a news story, it would have cited sources. Mr. Patrick didn’t. He mentioned a report of $200 million, and then he said — which was quoted in the post — “if it’s true they’re offering $200 million to a .290 hitter, it’ll be interesting to see what the Angels do.”
He then speculated about Manny Ramirez.
That’s it, the extent of it. A comment on a comment on an unspecified report. Amazingly, even other bloggers didn’t get it.
Also included in that post was a link to a Boston Herald column that suggested the Red Sox offer to Telxeira might go to $175 million. Or more.
CC Sabathia got $161 million from the Yankees for seven years. Do you believe for one second Scott Boras will want his client to come in second to that contract this winter? To match Sabathia, that’s eight years, $184 million, give or take a million, for a tie.
Add $2 million a year for an eight-year deal to that and you come up with $200 million. Not exactly a stretch.
I have a lot of respect for Dan Patrick. If he’s talking about $200 million, in speculation or otherwise, it is not beyond the realm of possibility.
While you’re here, I might as well direct you to a post by SI.com’s Jon Heyman on why the Angels are still players for Teixeira.
Please note his conclusion on where this is likely to go: $200 million.

Earl, the average reader takes things at face value and doesn’t consider such things as “citing sources.” When you hear something like “The Red Sox have offered Teixeira 8 year, $200m”……….your only hope is that a journalist/blogger would help us average joe’s out by saying “no sources quoted - likely not true” or pointing out the fact that it’s hogwash. Thanks for the clarification, though.

AngelsFan: Let me put it this way, if it’s likely not true, I not only won’t link to it so you can judge for yourself, I won’t even post it. Although the definitions of blogging are different than for most of the 37 years I either reported or edited sports NEWS stories, I can still use that acquired judgement in deciding what to post on. That said, I appreciate your opinion and your points are well taken.

Can I just say how much fun this blog has been. It is easily the best Angels blog and I don’t care whether it’s factual or speculative, it’s fun looking into these stories and reports. The fact that this team even has a blog that sees as much updating as this one does, is amazing, considering the team has been widely ignored in the blogosphere until recently.

I’m glad you posted this story because as much as I try listening to DP in the mornings, it’s hard for me with work, so thanks again for posting this.

People talk about the media trying to edit the news to be radical and attract viewers or readers. Bloggers are worse since the competition is more intense in the blogosphere, and sensationalism unfortunately can lead to fiction.

CbsSports.com reports Scioscia asked Francona about Manny Ramirez to get a feel for what Manny’s all about, and if he could be a good fit with the Angels.

Fox Sports reports, “Scioscia, appearing Monday with Roger Lodge and Dave Smith on AM 830 KLAA, heartily endorsed the idea of the Angels signing Ramirez as a free agent.”

It looks as though the Angels may be losing in the Teixeira sweepstakes and, in turn, are turning their attention to another big free agent slugger. Maybe the Sox offer is $200 mil? It wouldn’t suprise me.. all the reports out of Boston papers say the Sox have targeted Tex for years, and while they historically like to keep quiet about what they’re offering, they would certainly be willing to put up big money. Some Boston journalists familiar with Epstein and the Sox front office have even gone as far to say they wouldn’t be suprised if the Sox put up $250 over 10 years, if that’s what it takes to get him signed.

I agree with laangelsfan. I lived in NYC for 8 years before moving to London, and got used to the tabloid-y speculation of the hot stove season. Since the LA TImes mostly declines to cover rumors or speculation, I am very grateful to be able to come to this blog (as well as the 6-4-2 blog) to get all of my angels news in one or two sources instead of having to cull the web myself.
That said, I’d also add that I have been a huge proponent of re-signing Tex, but if we can’t get him for 8/$180 or even 8/$190, then i say good riddance and let’s beef up the pitching staff, sign Pat the Bat, give Kendry and B Wood a chance, and trade for Peavy if we don’t include Wood. There are bound to be mid-year acquisitions available as well from teams eager to cut payroll.
