Dan Patrick reported on his show on AM 570 that the Boston Red Sox have made first baseman Mark Teixeira
an eight-year, $200 million offer.
If so, that blows the reported eight-year, $160 million offers by the Angels and the Washington Nationals out of the water.
Patrick said Monday morning: “If it’s true they’re offering $200 million to a career .290 hitter, it’ll be interesting to see what the Angels do.”
He then speculated the Angels might turn their interest to Manny Ramirez.
The Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman wrote in his Monday column the Red Sox offer was expected to be in the range of $145 million to $175 million, possibly more.
He also noted that it is rare for Boston to extend contracts to players that go to their 36th birthdays, with the exceptions of Jason Varitek’s just-expired deal and Mike Lowell’s contract. Teixeira will be 29 in April.

Wow.
$25 million per year. The Angels have other options for that amount. Perhaps the Red Sox will become the Yankees of 2006 - 2008.
Too much money. Get some more pitching and a second tier free agent. Throwing money at people doesn’t guarantee a World Series. Let him go.
i love tex but we still couldent beat boston in playoffs.
200 million too much tho i love tex i would try add manny
short term in left , and revisit peavy in a deal. that way you upgrade your offence by a little bit, over tex and peavy gives you frontline pitching rotation 1 thru 5 . stay in house 4 a closer
Yes on Mark…… NO ON MANNY…….
Pitching wins games and World Series, not a $200MM hitter who is no Barry Bonds. Use the money to build the pitching staff and get some role players. Forget Manny Ramirez, also.
is this just rumor? sox never leak offer info. where is this report coming from? i have checked all sox sites and espn and can find nothing to confirm this.
Do we even know how much the Angels offered. I keep reading that they are not saying to amount offered, just that they offered 8 years.
Enough is enough Reagins and Moreno…..if we are not going to give him whatever he wants, f-him and now lets try to put a team together that can beat those a-hole RedSox………Trade for Peavy, Morales at first and sign MANNY!!!!!!! Where do I buy my dreadlocks?
I bet that this was leaked by Scott Boras. Red Sox never leak stuff like that. He’s just trying to make the Angels flinch. Tex is a stud at first and he’s young enough to sign to a long term deal. Manny is a two year fix at best and you don’t want his baggage. Vlad is getting old fast and the Angels need to do something or else I fear his signing was pointless. Honestly, they should have made the Tex trade a year ago. Morales is NOT the answer at first.
Let him go and try to get Koch back. He isn’t a miracle worker and he didn’t help us that much. Koch is a great player with a good bat and the fans love him. Morales can’t get the job done for us and Tex is too expensive. And PLEASE DON’T SIGN MANNY! We don’t need the drama.
What Adam said.
So… Adam Dunn looking pretty good right about now?
Don’t pay 1/5th of a billion dollars for Teixeira…No way. Next.
And please say NO to Manny as well… freakin drama queen with his girly hair and attitude. Get a haircut Manny!
as a reporter…don’t they check sources our at least check the sources source….Dan Patrick, and now this guy, seem to be the only ones jumping on this story. Where’s the boston globe on this new release…or ESPN or Fox News? NOBODY is reporting on this offer probably because, ITS A RUMOR. Not even the Red Sox themselves have information on this “offer.”
First the K-rod story and that fans hated him because of his color and now this…Come on OC Register, your better than this!
And Adam.. I agree, Morales is not the answer.
If major league teams are making these large offers in a down ecomomy, I wonder which team/teams we’ill be bailing out in the coming years……If the Angels turn thier interest to Manny, I’ll turn my interst to the Quakes or Flyers.
Tex is great but that’s just too much money. Diamond Club seats will go for $250 a pop, beer $12.50, hot dog $9.00. Where does it end?
Look at the economy, many (not Manny) are taking pay cuts. Look at GA, he signed a big contract, then developed back spasms. What did the Angel Fans get?
If the reports are true, the Angels made a great offer. If the Red Sox made that offer, they are crazy to offer 1/5 of a billion. Maybe they are getting some of the TARP money?
Thanks Tex, Boras, and the Red Sox Management for planting and sowing the seeds that will ruin baseball for the coming generations. This is what the UAW and Big Three Management did to the Automobile Industry 30-35 years ago.
The Red Sox and Yankees are horrible for baseball. Someone needs to put a stop to both of them. If it wasn’t for those two teams we wouldn’t have these high prices. Enough already. The economy is bad and they want to keep spending?
I hope if the Angels lose Teixeira he at least goes to a team that will give the Angels decent draft picks. The Nationals don’t have to give up their first round pick. I’m not sure if the Orioles were bad enough for that too. The Yankees are already signing two Type A free agents. If they get Teix who gets their first round pick?
Speaking of draft picks, how about some real rules so the Yankees can’t just sign every Type A free agent on the market? Something is wrong in baseball.
I believe this is Boras non-sense. I can’t picture them offering this kind of money but who knows. If this is true, I’d move on(run don’t walk) becaue his value isn’t big enough over a replacement player to cost $25m/yr. The Sox are insane to be offering this deal, if it’s indeed true.
Has anybody confirmed this offer.. I haven’t seen anything posted anywhere.?
I really, really don’t buy it. If it’s true, of course, the sweepstakes are all over, but if the $160/8-year rumors from the Angels are true (and that is also a big if), why would the Red Sox kick in an extra $40 mil/25% on the deal? Negotiations don’t tend to move in leaps that large, except in selected Yankee cases.
$25 million per year. The Angels have other options for that amount. Perhaps the Red Sox will become the Yankees of 2006 - 2008.
If you have been following the Yankee’s this off season they are going to have less payroll than last year due to a lot of key contracts ending. They were under budget last year so it looks like unless they sign Tex. they will be way under budget this year.
Beginning to look like the Koch for Tex trade was a bad idea. Tough to hang on to workers that come from the east coast. Must be that soft shelled crab.
INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If this offer is actually out there, I think it would have been accepted already. How long did it take CC to take the Yankees offer after they added the additional $21 million? This reported off is at least $20 millions more than any other offer we’ve heard, and it is with the team with the best chance of winning a championship. None of the other teams would come close to matching. If this offer is actually out there, Tex will be with the Red Sox by the end of the day. I doubt this offer actually exists.

Without the Yankees and red sox, a couple of baseball teams would not even be existing as the owners would not have the opportunity to make money anymore. Ever heard of revenue sharing? Or luxury tax? Stop complaining about teams who are just playing by the rules.
I wonder who the source is that reported this? Hopefully Arte Moreno is smarter than Tom Hicks and the Rangers. Remember what Boras and A-Rod did to them. Stick to your offer Arte and don’t bid against yourself like they did.
How could the Red Sox become the Yankees of 2006-2008? The yankees problems were lack of pitching depth, injuries and an over-the-hill team. The Red Sox have a great core of young players and one of the best pitching staffs around. Signing a young 1B like Teixiera would just make them better.
This report is FALSE
This rumor is not true. You are all being sucked in to Boras’ wicked schemes. Scioscia himself said on the radio the deal is not done on Teixeira, and the Angels are still very much involved. I believe Scioscia over some rumor-mongering journalists and a dying local newspaper like OC Register.
Red Sox fan here…
No chance this came from the Red Sox, as others have stated, they never leak this kind of thing.
I want Tex pretty bad and I’m actually fine with 8/200. Lowell and Ortiz both have serious health concerns and we need another power bat regardless.
It’s not my money, just GET IT DONE.
Put a definitive time limit on the offer that has been made for Tex. Don’t get involved in any bidding war (real or imagined) as orchestrated by Boras. If Tex turns it down, move fast and furious on a deal for Peavy. Then fill in the holes as you see fit. Overspending on one player may have devastating effects over the next five years. We, as fans, know that Angel management is very serious about fielding a competitive team. You don’t have to prove anything to me Mr. Moreno.
Full disclosure: Red Sox fan talking
$200 million is a lot, but Theo Epstein has always thrown money at players he covets (see: Lugo, Julio, Rentaria, Edgar and Drew, J.D.), and he really wants Tex. It’s not surprising to see this (if it’s true, which I doubt; I agree it’s probably Boras talking out of his you-know-what), but even if it’s not, it might eventually get to this point.
However, I do take issue with the fact that a deal like this is “bad for baseball”. I think the Rays this year, as well as teams like the 2003 Marlins and even the 2002 Halos, proved that money isn’t a guarantee for winning. But what spending money does bring in is outside revenue. Look at the clubs that get the biggest national TV ratings. Yankees, Sox, Mets, Dodgers. The teams that spend the money. You could argue they get the ratings because they spend the money, or you could argue the opposite (which came first, the chicken or the egg?)
It may be bad from a competitive standpoint. But it would be great for league revenue, after a year with record-low World Series ratings. And under the CBA, the money from the luxury tax (which is regularly broken) gets redistributed to the teams relatively equally. High prices are always going to be there; that’s inflation, and a sign of the times. But by a big-market team spending money, not only does some of that money (luxury tax payment) go directly to every other team, but it increases TV ratings, road attendance figures, etc., which long-term can help the league economy.
I’ve gotta be honest, while I’m shocked at the offer (if it’s real), I can’t say that I hate the Yankees or Red Sox or that they should be removed from baseball, or any of that nonsence. Look, the Yankees spend because they can. They have the highest revenue stream in the game. The YES network alone brings in so much that they can afford to always have the largest payroll and still make money. Hey, it’s better than them just sticking the profits into their pockets, isn’t it? At least they’re putting money back into the team. You know, I wish my team would always do that. They’re not bad for baseball, the teams that “steal” the revenue sharing and luxury tax money from the big clubs and then just pocket it w/o trying to be competitive are what’s bad for baseball IMO.
I agree with everyone that this is likely a nonsense leak by Boras to drive up the price… the Red Sox don’t have to pay Texiera $25 million a year to go to Boston - it won’t take that much. The best the Red Sox can do with Texiera is keep him out of Anaheim (where he was killing the ball in the playoffs) and NY.
Did you even listen to the context of what DP was saying? This was clearly just hypothetical and not breaking news at all. The fact that you reported it as breaking news is shameful. I would be embarrassed if I were you.
On a related note, while the Red Sox aren’t afraid to pay… their biggest deal under current ownership was the JD Drew deal (4 years for 16 million or so?). Not exactly chump change, but they haven’t been breaking the bank to the degree that NY teams have in the last 10 years and the Red Sox under Duquette (who did the Manny and Pedro deals). Don’t ask me to explain the Lugo contract… I’m still shaking my head about that one.
I won’t be surprised if the Sox pass on Texiera, and this is all a ploy to drive up the price for whoever signs him. The already have a good tandem in Lowell and Youkilis on the corners, with virtual slam dunk prospect 1B Lars Anderson coming down the pike in a year or two.
This isn’t anywhere on Dan Patrick’s web site. Wondering if this is just hearsay….
Hey Brian, Id like to ask why you would say the Sox are bad for baseball? Is it because of cash? The Angels have spent tons of cash over the last few years. Not as much as the Sox but their salary has been up there.
The Red Sox did spend money in the past like that on players. As of late they have completely rebuilt their team. They are not even close to the Yankees salary but still have continued to battle them. If the Sox spend money on Tex then let them. Your team has spent money in the past. I remeber how pissed I was when you guys got Hunter and the cash you spent on him.
Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Moreno has the cash to spend and has shown that in the past. If he wants Tex he can afford to keep him. Problem is Tex wants to play on the east coast. Can blame a guy for that. And you especially cant blame him if he gets the east coast with a record amount of cash and is on a competetive team. Wake up and smell the coffee. The Sox arent bad for baseball. The angels are bad to their free agents.
This rumor is FALSE! It has just been debunked at MLB trade rumors.com:
2:34pm: A reader who heard the show says Patrick was only speaking in the hypothetical with the $200MM figure, so Bloom’s post was apparently inaccurate. This is why I typically avoid radio reports unless I hear them myself…sorry about that. In listening to the Reggie Miller interview on Patrick’s site he was definitely only giving an opinion during that portion.
I saw Mike Scocsia this morning at Starbucks and he didn’t loked too perturbed! Don’t believe everything you read or in this case, hear.
DP never said this! Nice reporting!
Mo Vaughn’s available.
There’s so much “bull” reporting here at the OCReg it’s borderline pathetic. This one goes in with the rest of the ever-growing, huge heap of junk ranging from “the Angels didn’t get anything done during the winter meetings” to “they left the meetings with less than they’d hope.”
Go after AGonzo and Peavy for Adenhart/Morales/Aybar (or Wood)/Conger and another AAA pitcher. This is a good deal for both teams. Angels are getting guys in their youth that they can lock up for awhile.
Quit moaning about trading away youth. These type deals need to be made to continue to develop youth w/o moving them along too fast.
Go after San Diego’s talent!! Team is apparently for sale, and payroll needs to be reduced. Bud Black would gladly have the above guys to fill holes at short/1st and pitching.
Pad’s won 63 games last year and a long way from their winning days. They need to re-build, but give talent the chance to win now, and for the next few years. Parting with AAA players, and getting guys in their prime in return is a no brainer.
So this was rumor, as expected.
Now as for the peavy talks..regardless if the angels sign Tex or not, we need it. Brandon Wood is overrated and how many more years will it take for the rest of the fans to see this. Whats it been, five years of the angel media telling us he will be good, “we see it.”
Would you or your work keeping giving someone a chance if he wouldn’t perform when given the chance year after year. All the B.S. that he hasn’t had enough bats, well he did this year and yet again…HE SUCKED. Its time to give up on this “talent” and trade him while he is worth something.
I like Sean Rodriguez and what I saw in him was a good to see. Lets focus on getting him ready cause Wood wont ever bee.
So lets go Angels, lets build a championship team how its always been done, through pitching.
PEACE OUT BRANDON WOOD!!!
R M I totally agree withcha’
I used to be a die hard baseball fan, but I just can’t stomach it anymore because I’m tired of seeing the Red Sox and the Yankees raise the roof on salaries and drive up prices. This is ridiculous, and very soon, it’s going to come back and bite the sport where the sun don’t shine. Baseball fans can barely afford a ticket with today’s economy, yet Tex is ging to get $200 million of OUR money?
There should be a salary cap, but the players and the major market clubs will NEVER allow it.
What is it going to take for the players to learn that this can’t last forever… and could ruin the sport. Or do they care?
Forget it, I’m done with baseball.
Tex at $200 million 8 to 10 years I am not interested….no thanks. If the angels don’t get him I hope he rots with the nats or the o’s just like he did with the rangers.
I honestly hope neither the redsox or yankees get him but if they do I hope they overpay big time….it sounds like it is going in that direction if one can believe the borass hype.
Manny can hit in the post season. At the right price I say get him….Scioscia knows how to handle him and Arte would love to steal the local thunder away from the lame @ss dodgers.
Pitching is key and always will be so we need to be sure our rotation and pen stay solid.
Of course it all depends on what the simpleton Jeff Miller says…..we need to be sure our color ratio stays in place or will be accused of racism. Maybe not getting the white boy tex would help jeffy boy see through his tinted contacts.
Too Much Money!!!! Put Kendry Morales at 1st and if you can get Manny in left for Garret, Then pick up another pitcher like Peavy we will be good!!!!
Last year it was all pitching that got the 100 wins!! Stick with it!!
THE WORST PART ABOUT LOSING TEIXIERA IS IT MEANS WE GAVE AWAY
CASY KOTCHMAN FOR NOTHING…MAYBE WE NEEDED TO REALIZE WITH SCOTT BORAS AS AGENT RESIGNING TEX WAS NOT GOING TO BE EASY…
THE TRUTH IS BORAS DOES NOT CARE HOW MUCH BASEBALL IS HURT BY
HIS DEMANDS FOR $$$$$$…AND WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER JOSE GUILLAN IN MANNY…WE SAW WHAT HE DID IN BOSTON, NO THANKS…..
