Manny Ramirez, a good fit on the Angels? Mike Scioscia apparently thinks so.
Scioscia, who first said it at the winter meetings, expanded on that point Monday with AM 830 KLAA, an interview covered by mlb.com’s Lyle Spencer.
The Angels manager said, based on what he’s heard through background checks, Ramirez would be a fit on a lot of clubs, including his, provided the length of contract and the resources were right — issues that would affect any player.
Scioscia said the Angels “wouldn’t rule him out because of what might be considered some things that happened toward the middle of last season in Boston.”
Scioscia went out of his way to contrast Ramirez with Jose Guillen, the outfielder who was dealt after he was at odds with the manager and coaching staff four years ago.
With the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes having reached the eight-year, $160 million level for sure and four teams in the running — the Angels, Red Sox, Orioles and Nationals with the Yankees lurking on the outside, observing, for now — Ramirez might be the consolation prize. His deal certainly won’t be for eight years, at least.
NO MANNY!!!!!!! Boo…… Hiss…….. Big thumbs down on that…….
Sign him now! Kim…..you know nothing about baseball!
ARE YOU KIDDING, SIGN HIM UP FOR 3 YEARS!!!!!!!
Manny would be the spark that the Angels seem to lack in the post season. Sign him now!
Sign Manny to 3 yrs 60-65. Angels need a bat as it seems like Tex wants to stay with his fam out east. Then sign Abreu, Dunn, or Giambi.
Sorry Garrett it was a great run.
You’ll end up saving a lot of money with less guaranteed years with the same power potential if not more. You have to sacrifice something for the Gary Matthews Jr. gaffe.
Manny and Vladdy are pals, and would feed off each other…Manny has the x-factor the Angels are missing! Sign him ASAP, then go get Peavy and Dunn!!!
I won’t go to the Circus (Angel games). I am afraid of clowns (Manny).
First of all, great comment Ed! I liked that!! Second of all, I would be down with bringing in Manny as long as Scioscia gives Kendry Morales a legitimate shot at first base!!! If we don’t get Tex, this would be a good solution.
Kelly is right!!! Sign Manny for 3 years $66million then trade for Peavy and Atkins and sign Dunn as free agent! Done deal
I don’t understand people who say don’t sign Manny. He might help the Angels more than Mark Teixeira will. Just not for that long. He might be the safer signing though. Eight years is a long time to sign anyone to. And Manny seems to hit great anywhere he plays.
I think Manny haters don’t like him because of how he acted in Boston. Don’t forget though he was never happy there. Their fans are horrible if you’re a star and like to go out and not be bothered. Sure Manny would get attention here but he could walk around and people will leave him alone. In Boston he was in a fish bowl.
Besides, signing Manny would really get to the Dodgers. They think nobody wants him so they’re just sitting back and waiting. Then at the end they’ll make him so stupid offer and hope he’ll be desperate enough to take it,
Ok ur daddy apparently YOU know all there is to know about baseball right?? Excuse me but everyone is entitled to there own opinions around here and just because you think one way does not mean that I do not know anything about baseball…… Thanks for your opinion but you know what they say opinions are like……..
Sign Manny? Mmmmmm Name the most feared hitter in all of baseball…… Name the one team the Angels cannot seem to beat enroute to the World Series…. Name the one player on the planet that wants nothing more then to DESTROY the Red Sox…… If A then B then C… perfectly logical…. Get Manny : Beat Boston.
You sign Manny it is a great move for two reasons:
1. Keep the Dodger fans angry that the Angels are always one step ahead. I know Arte loves that.
2. You know Manny would love to be a thorn in the side of the Red Sox. And we need something to get us over the hump in the playoffs against the Red Sox.
sign manny he rules
While Manny is not the all around player of Tex he is a more dangerous hitter period! Yes, Manny can be a defensive liability but he’s more capable then people think. Manny also brings an intangible that many people do not regognize ‘Fun’. He lightens up a team and always includes his teammates in his success and his Dodger teammates loved him! I’ve never seen the Dodgers ever have fun & be so loose as they were at the end of last season.
That is how the Dodgers turned it around and Manny was the ring leader of that circus. He was also the ring leader of the Boston Circus that brought World Series Championships to the Red Sox. They’ve got none without him and they don’t play as loose or have as much fun as they did. Don’t underestimate that strength and the positive influence that could have on an organization such as the “Angels’.
Yeah, Manny’s a circus but it’s a GOOD ONE!!!!!!! Sign him & save the Tex Dollars in order to fill all the other dire needs within the organization. Especially the one the organization created by letting K-Rod go??????? You know you can go back in life an undo stupid mistakes. Trade with the Met’s to get K-Rod back!!!!!!! Who’s better?
I’d rather see “Manny, Moe, and Jack” from Pep Boys play at Angel Stadium.
Maybe “Moe, Larry and Curly” from the Three Stooges would be a better show.
I know! Sign Mo Vaughn as Moe, Manny can be Curly or Larry… and watch the side show unfold.
Geeez there are some rediculous comments being posted on here. I bet you guys are the ones who call the Angels post game radio show complaning about the Big A having some non working light bulbs.
-K Rod has hit his peak and will come crashing down in NY 2009.
-The Angels can’t afford Manny, Peavy, Atkins, & Dunn. This is unrealistic because they have more contracts comming due (ie Lackey, Figgins, Vlad).
-Sign Manny, trade Aybar and give Wood the nod at SS.
-Let Morales take over at first and watch the Angels soar in ‘09!
I’m officially a big fan of Mike V.
The sad thing about the Angels this off season is this! If they kept K-Rod and the rest of the bullpen intact from the end of last season along with additional seasoning with Arredondo & Jepson they are a better bullpen then even last year. If the Angels add Jake Peavy to their starting lineup and slide everyone down a notch they are a better starting staff then last year and a healthy Escobar mid season makes them one of the finest staffs top to bottom maybe ever! Lastly, if the Angels keep Tex or add Ramirez and don’t give up Wood (Give him a whole season at shortstop unconditionally) or Kendrick or Kendry Morales in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes they ‘re in good shape. But still would need to add a Adam Dunn or some other crusher to fill the DH role because Morales would need to play either 1B or left field. If they do this they would have a superior offense from last year and the club would have been improved in all facets.
But the Angels blew this by letting K-Rod go. And anybody who differs about K-Rod just needs to grab a bat and face all the best relievers in the game. After such a test reality would set in and this town would praise K-Rod instead of bash him. He’s the best in the game right now and the Angels let him walk. The Angels have a big hole to dig themselves out of and can only improve two facets of their game verses three now. There’s no reliever available in the game who can take K-Rod’s place. The only way the Angels are going to wipe that egg off their face is to add Peavy and Tex or Ramirez plus a big time slugger at DH. If they don’t they have no chance to be a better team then last year. They’ll be playing on fumes.
I would be a big fan of mikee, too, but I find his manny-happy persona a little disturbing. Whether people enjoy smoke blown up their keyhole intentionally or unintentionlly, the Angels have absolutely no desire to acquire manny. Scioscia’s comment was just a diplomatic and tactful retort in so that he doesn’t inadvertently burn his bridges. It could also possibly be a tatic to gain leverage in the Tex ordeal. Either way, scioscia does not want manny.
As my enthusiasm wanes for Tex, and after the dust has settled , I now hold that the 8 year proposal offered to tex is completely off mark and borderline irresponsible. At one point I was excited, but now I hope Tex doesn’t accept the Angels’ proposal. With the situations (boston, nationals, and baltimore) existing with this tex sweepstake, I’m afraid that Tex may already be heading to so cal due to the circumstances that presently exist.
Let the other also-ran teams allocate all their resources to this astronomical, ill-conceived pricetag. Angels should take back the contract offered to Tex and use that appropriation to upgrade the team.
I agree with most of what Craig said. K-rod is irreplaceable! Second, why are we talking about the future with K-rod? Why don’t we, or didn’t we, focus on the past and the present. He is a great reliever, and as 2009 unfolds, a lot of Angel fans are going to realize that if their pride doesn’t get in the way.
Also, Kendry Morales is a natural 3rd basemen, so he as a lot of versatility to fill a hole that we may not fill. Let’s say we sign Tex, put him at 3rd, and move Figgins to left. If we sign Manny, put Morales at 1st and leave Figgins on 3rd.
And let’s get rid of Rob Quinlan already!!!!
