ESPN’s Karl Ravech said Tuesday that Mark Teixeira is getting closer and closer to making a decision.
Citing a source close to the negotiations, Ravetch said the five teams (Angels, Red Sox, Orioles, Nationals, Yankees) in pursuit of the first baseman are continuing to up the ante.
Ravetch said that while Teixeira wants to go to a winning team, his source said to not count out the hometown Orioles as a possibility.
If you can’t play the ESPN video, the Boston Globe summarized Ravetch’s report online.

Statistically, the Angels provide Tex. with the best opportunity of all these teams to return to the playoffs. And that, in my opinion, will be the final deciding factor in where he goes. In MLB, each division can have no more than 2 teams in the playoffs. The Rays, Yankees and Boston will be battling for 2 playoff (at most) spots. There will be an odd team out. Unless they completely implode (which they won’t), the Angels stand the best chance of winnong their division and returning to the playoffs. Tx, stop teasing us and make the best statistical decision.

Huge Angel’s fan here! This is what I think the Angel’s should have done. Texeira has been quoted as saying he wants a 10 year deal. So offer him 10 years at 18 million a season. Yes it’s not 20 million a season, but he gets his 10 years for a little less. Also, when it’s said and done, if we don’t get him, I think we will always kick ourselves for not “really” going after him. He’s a great player, with great character and hussle, he’s worth it in my book. And in ten years, his knees will probably still be better than Vlady’s!

The Orioles? Come on, Teix wants to be on a contender. There’s only three teams on that list he’ll end up on and none starts with an O or N. Even if the Orioles or Nationals offers the most money he won’t take their offer.

  • Brian says:

David - I agree, the Angels are the best option. They have no real division competition. The Yankees and Red Sox each have the other team. The Nationals and Orioles, they can compete for last place in their divisions. If Teix wants the best chance to go to the playoffs every year pick the Angels.
