Not much has changed in the Great Mark Teixeira Wait.
The Red Sox are still considered the frontrunners, with the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo adding comments to that effect from yet another unnamed general manager to the mix.
Among those remarks: “Manny (Ramirez) is going to the Yankees.”
In New York they are not as certain, although it seems one report Wednesday said the Yankees had officially rejected Teixeira (pictured), but the two Steinbrenner sons were hot after Manny.
The headline on that latter post seems a little strong. I wouldn’t call anyone out of it just yet, and the Yankees were always said to be just lurking on the edge of the Teixeira negotiations anyway.
The New York Daily News has a Ramirez story that offers dissenting, albeit unnamed, opinions on a homecoming for the dreadlocked outfielder.
In Baltimore, the Orioles say they’re not out of it contrary to some reports, and their stance has “flexibility.”
I’m starting to believe that Teixeira is waiting for the Angels to drop out, per the direction of Boras. The Red Sox don’t need Teixeira so they can wait until spring training if they wanted to. The Angels on the other hand don’t have the luxury of time on their side. THey have other needs to fill and some of these free agents are going to start dropping, even before Tex signs a deal. Once the Angels drop out, Tex can give the obligatory line of “I want to thank the Angels for a few great months - I’m really fond of the organization and its people. I understand that they had other business to do. I’m really happy to sign with the Red Sox” blah blah blah
Boras gets his big deal for Tex in Boston and Manny goes to Anaheim…….just like he drew it up. The Angels never stood a chance.
I think the Angels more than anyone has to pony up the 10 year contract, or at least an 8 with 2 year option, if we are going to get him to uproot his family from the east coast. I think ten years would be appealing to move his family out here. I think when you go somewhere to settle down, 10 years is the minimum in my book. I know some like to move every 2-5 years, but I think that is insane. I have a feeling when all is said and done, we should have offered a ten year contract.
It does seem like a 10-year deal is what it will take to keep Tex. I think it is really insane to do it, with the economy and all, but I think it is even more insane for the Angels not to do it.
If Tex slips away, then this winter’s action starts to look like a big disaster: Good-bye to K-Rod, Tex, GA, Rivera, Garland, etc. It would especially be sad if the Angels then start loading up on old guys that other teams don’t want, just like the Angels of old used to do!!!
No, I think the least insane thing to do is make a big whopper of an offer to Tex, keep him and the fans happy, and attract all kinds of other players to the Big A. At least that has the potential of working, whereas letting him go really doesn’t…
I agree EricMan. We’re not going to regret paying him the contract as much as we’re going to regret not signing him.
