Believe it or not: $195 million for Teixeira?

December 19th, 2008, 10:36 pm · 10 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Eight years, $195 million.
Depending upon who you believe, that is the Mark Teixeira contract demand that led to the Boston Red Sox walking away from negotiations with uber-agent Scott Boras — or not.
Citing a source, that $195 millon is what ESPN’s talented duo of Peter Gammons and Buster Olney is reporting, under a joint byline, as what the Red Sox were told they were competing against.
However, in an interview with ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, Boras characterized that figure as “inaccurate.”
While many, including the Boston Globe, want to style the Red Sox as still in it despite owner John Henry’s strong indications to the contrary, one thng that is certain is this: The Angels are sticking to their original, eight-year offer that GM Tony Reagins (pictured at right, with Angels owner Arte Moreno and baseball commissioner Bud Selig) calls “a fair offer.”
The Angels, while maintaining Teixeira remains their No. 1 priority, are settling other business, signing outfielder Juan Rivera to a three-year deal that would seem to indicate he is more than just an extra piece in their arsenal.
Crasnick says all indications are Teixeira prefers to play on the East Coast, which would rule out the Angels, regardless of their offer.
If not the Red Sox, it must be the Baltimore Orioles or Washington Nationals providing the big-money competition for Teixeira. The New York Yankees have denied involvement on that level. Or it might just be Boras posturing.
Stay tuned.

I hate to impugn a man’s integrity, but don’t we all pretty much assume that Boras was “posturing” to the Red Sox about there being a $195 million offer, and is now “posturing” to Crasnick about it?

It’s hard to follow negotiations when you aren’t sure what’s real or fake. I give up following this one - I can’t recall so much drama over a free agent that’s about to make a Super Lotto winner jealous.

Maybe the Angels should give Teix what he really wants, 10 years and $200 million. But give him more early on so the last two years aren’t much. That would get Teix for sure. Would anyone else match or go past that?

The Red Sox don’t really need Teix. The Yankees don’t either. The Orioles and Nationals will still stink with him. The Angels are the only team that can really use Teix and need to do what it takes to get him.

  • AngelsFan says:

Brian, I agree the Red Sox don’t need him but the Yankees surely do. Who’s got A-Rod’s back right now? They’ve lost 40+ HR’s and 200 RBI’s by dropping Giambi and Abreu. Their lineup is anything but imposing right now. I fear the Yankees swoop in and take him and reports have the Yankees and Angels talking to Boras again. It makes way too much sense for them. They take Boston’s prize, get the bat they definitely need and know Manny isn’t going to Boston. If I were the Yankees, I’d wait to see who’s likely to get Tex. If it looks like Boston will get him, then go for it and outbid them. If it looks like someone else is going to get him, then let him go and sign Manny.

Why couldn’t that big money offer have come from the Angels?

What “fair” means to Arte Moreno and Tony Reagins could mean something totally different to someone else.

Again, this is the team that spent $90 million last year on Hunter. I know the figure of $160 million keeps getting circulated, but no one knows what the Angels have offered.

  • G.T. says:

I agree with AngeslFan. I fear the Yankees coming in and sweeping up Tex with a last minute offer (they certainly have the money as $80M came off of the books for them this off-season; even with CC/AJ, that’s less than $40M). Consider this, if the season started today, this would be their starting lineup:
    1. Damon - LF
    2. Cano - 2B
    3. Jeter - SS
    4. ARod - 3B
    5. Matsui - DH
    6. Nady - RF
    7. Posada - C
    8. Swisher - 1B
    9. Cabrera - CF
Not exactly a lineup that strikes fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers. Not exactly a lineup you want to open the new Yankee Stadium with. They are going to get at least one if not 2 power bats…

ANGELS, DONT DO IT!!! 25 million on one guy? might as well sign 2 guys (one for 13 million and other at 12 million).

  • G.T. says:

    Which two guys ?

  • bsmash says:

^^^burrell/abreu and oliver perez? who ever.

  • pirate2229 says:

Fox and Angels webpage just reported that the their offer to Tex has been withdrawn.
I’m so glad they did, way too much for one player, as good as he was, he couldn’t it all and the team needed help elsewhere.
Arty, Tony and Mike take another look at Peavy and Gonzalez.
