Red Sox fans like Angels’ chances

December 19th, 2008, 8:26 am · 30 Comments · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

The Boston Globe has some interesting polls up.
As of 8:20 a.m., 55 percent of Red Sox fans believe their team is out of the Mark Teixeira hunt for good.
More than 33 percent believe he will sign with the Angels; 31 percent still say the Red Sox. Ominously the Yankees are third at 20 percent.
Some Boston fans believe this is the same scenario playing out when Alex Rodriguez was traded from Texas to New York after being unable to strike an expected deal with the Red Sox that would’ve included a trade for Manny Ramirez.

(Editor’s note) Hold onto your ticket stubs, Angels fans … as of 12:15 p.m. the Red Sox just pulled in front of the Angels among their fans. The Red Sox have 36.4 percent of the vote to the Angels’ 31.6.

I don’t know, Earl, I can’t convince myself to be optimistic. John Henry’s email to the press seemed to be all about money, and if the Angels are still sitting comfortably below the Boston money Teixeira turned down. ….

I probably should have written this down some weeks back so I could claim some credit if it comes true, but I’ve long thought it was going to be one of the Potomac teams saying to heck with it and giving Teixeira $20 million more than anybody else would. That seems to be how bad mid-market teams do it.

  • Brian says:

I read this morning on cnnsi.com John Heyman reporting the so-called inside sources say the Red Sox aren’t really out of it. They’re just trying to force Scott Boras’s hand. The Angels need to do everything possible to keep Teix. If he goes to another team though don’t let it be the lousy Nationals. We won’t get their first round pick. That’s the last team I want to lose him to. The problem is I think the Orioles were also bad enough to not lose their first round draft pick.

Arte just needs to make sure he holds on to Teix. Without him the offense will be pretty bad. Unless they manage to get Manny,

  • Kim says:

We definitely need to get Tex!!! When is this going to be over already….. Geez!! This waiting and wondering is driving me insane!!! Tex you want to be an Angel you know you do just stop the madness and sign with them already……

    :-)

  • Matsuda says:

I still think Tex wants to stay on the east coast. Regardless of what happens with the BoSox, he’ll end up somewhere in the east. I hate to sound pessimistic, but I’d be shocked if he landed with the Angels.

  • Tom says:

Thanks for your input Stephen….now shut up.

  • adam says:

Forget Tex. Let him go to Boston. The Angels need Manny.

  • Irvine5 says:

Did anyone else notice Tampa knock off the Red Sox in the ALCS? It is not about chasing the best mid-to-late career stars with huge contracts. It is about spreading wealth around to several ’second-tier’ stars that are still trying their hardest to one day win the big pay day as well as continually developing young players (and stealing away great young players form other orgs).

I will be the first to go out on a limb that the NYY will not win the Series even with the $250MM spent on their top 2 starters. I would take Peavy at a fraction of the pricetag over either C.C. or A.J.

  • Jav says:

Wow Stephen, Red Soxs Finally win a World Series and you so called fans sound exactly like Yankee fans. But worst; you people feel entitled to something for all those years of constant let down. Jesus Christ give it a break people, Congrats you’re as good as the Florida Marlins!

  • mike says:

i agree with Irvine5 and add that the Angels could trade with Padres for Peavy and their 1st baseman Adrian G, who by the way hit 36 HR’s and drove in over 100 last year , (young player and won GG)and still probably sign Manny to play left - that to me is a much better deal at this point then getting Tex back.

  • Rick says:

Brian there are no 1st round picks involved with Tiexeira. He’s a free agent and he can go to wherever he pleases ! If it’s not the angels he signs with ,we as Angel fans hope he goes to a a National team.

  • sammiller says:

    Rick,
That’s not correct. Teixeira is a “type A” free agent, so whichever team signs him gives their first round pick to the Angels, and the Angels also get an extra pick between the first and second rounds.

The Angels DON’T get the team’s pick if the team has one of the first 15 picks, though. So if the Nationals sign him the Angels would get Washington’s second round pick.

Still better for the Angels that he not go to a competitor, of course, but there is a draft pick effect involved.

  • Mike says:

Rick, Tex is a Type A free agent, as was K-Rod. If the team that previously had those players lose them to free agencey they are compensated to a first round draft pick. The only thing I have to say in comment to Stephen is he better keep hoping Tex does not sign with the Angels, with the Sox standing still so far and it not looking any better for them to improve they may be on th eoutside looking in. The Angels NEED to get Tex, badly. If not they are going to have a hard time to put runs on the board again, Vladdy has been declining the plast couple years. If nto Tex, as much as I hate to say it we have to take a shot at Manny.

  • Horton says:

Let him go. We can still sigh Dunn to play 1st and get Bobby Abreu to take over in RF. Abreu is one of only 3 players to have over 100 RBi in 6 consecutive seasons. Along with ARod and Pujols. Pretty good company….Add Dunn’s 40 Hrs for sure and that is a really powerful lineup with Vladdy and Torii and, although he was expensive Matthews Jr. WILL pay off if he give him enough playing time. This would be a devistating lineup and we would still be very close to the per year $ amount it would take to get Tiex and we wont have to go out the 8 yrs. Offer both Dunn and Abreu a 4yr deal and lets win a ring.

Add in a trade of Wood, Adenheart and Jepson for Peavy and our rotation would be Lackey, Peavy, Santana, Weaver and Saunders.

    LIGHTS OUT!

  • Horton says:

Ohhh and Stephen, think before you speak. If the Angels are Losers then what are the Red Sox? 130 years of existance and how many rings?

  • Jason says:

    Hey Jav,
as I dont agree fully with Stephen…I will correct you with one thing the Marlins….have only one once(world series)….like the Angels, and yes he is entitled to that cuz the Angels to get handed by the Sox in the Post Season, but congrats on at least getting one game this year in the Post Season against the Sox (thats progress).
I believe that the Angels need him for their dominance in the West, but regardless you will still make the Playoffs again. Where ever Tex lands…i hope Boras gets an ulcer!

  • Ms. Claus says:

Teixeira will come to Anaheim. I will bring him in the sled if I have too. I promised it to a lil’ boy who said that was all he wanted for Christmas!

    Merry Christmas

  • Bob says:

Tom, Stephen is so right. The Angels will never get out of the first round.

  • AngelsFan says:

The Red Sox are too stupid to realize that Manny Ramirez was the biggest reason they won two titles. He’s one of the most clutch hitters the game has had yet they slammed him after 7.5 years of outstanding production. The Red Sox are classless after John Henry made such an absurd comment.

As for getting Tex, there’s more to the game than a 3/4 hitter(Tex and Youk). Pedroia is a good player but the rest of the team is getting old. Papi is on his way down and they know it. Who’s going to catch? Jed Lowrie at short? Gve me a break. Ellsbury has some skills but definitely not a game changer. If Tex doesn’t land in Boston, you Boston fans damn well better hope that Matt Holliday arrives there next year because Jason Bay is gone too and JD Drew is a joke.

As for where Tex lands, who the hell knows. I’m so disgusted with the entire process, I’d really rather the Angels drop out and spend the $20m+ somewhere else. I’m totally sick of hearing about this, every article is dedicated to the guy and there’s about 10 of them every day. Sign your friggin’ $180m contract and quite your damn crying!!!

  • RC says:

Hey Jason you may want to look up the history books a little bit. I would assume that you are probably a kid so I will fill you in. The Marlins have won the World Series TWICE, look up 1997 and 2003. Look up the info before you post.

Stephen you need to move back to that sewer called Boston and join your fellow Boston lovers Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney.

  • Mike V. says:

I have been waiting and watching for Tex to come back to OC since the end of the season and I can actually say I’m over it already! This process has taken ridiculously long. I do not believe the Angels will pay Tex what he wants. The Red Sox, however will pay more than anyone else will offer. They did it w/Dice K, did it with JD Drew, and they will do it again this year for Tex. For a team and following (i.e. “Red Sox Nation”) who despise the Yankees so much they are sure doing everything they once hated.

Getting back to Tex; I believe he is already gone. With the Angels signing Rivera (who will finally be able to get enough ABs to produce consistently) Manny will not be coming either. Rumors are that the Halos will either get Giambi to cover first, possibly trade Figgins or some young players to Chicago for Konerko, or stand pat and give the job to Morales.

If the Angels still do not have what it takes to see themselves as a WS threat by the trade deadline look for them to make a big deal again. With the way the economy is going I’ve heard there might be some small-mid size teams needing to unload payroll by mid season just to avoid going under.

Bottom line is there is still plenty of time and talent out there to get a WS contending team on the field. Tex is not the only option. So no matter what happens, trust that the Angels will have a quality team on the field and do whatever (responsible) thing they can to bring home a world championship.

  • AngelsFan says:

I can’t even believe we’d consider a trade for Konerko. Unless he can be had for nothing, why get a guy that isn’t producing?

I’d rather get Giambi and since Boston will be desperate to deal Mike Lowell, I’d certainly take a look at him too. By the way, any team going after Lowell will want the Red Sox to pay $10m of Lowell’s salary, which you can immediately add to the top of the contract cost for Teixeira.

  • Dano says:

Even though Teixeira is a good ball player, he’s not worth $20+ million a year, much less 8 or more years. Nobody is. It’s time that teams start behaving in a sensible manner with these guys. Remember folks, he was with us last year and we still choked in the first round of the playoffs.

  • sammiller says:

    Correlation ain’t causation, Dano.

  • JoeCinOC says:

I, as a huge Angel’s fan, don’t want Giambi or Konerko. Let’s not get older and more decrepit!!! I would rather see the jobs go to the younger guys who are hungrier and have more to prove.

I ask myself this question: At this point, would I rather have Garret Anderson or Juan Rivera in left? Given their track records, I would take Garret in a heart beat. I know he is older, but man, he does produce year after year. I haven’t been that impressed with Rivera. I think signing him was a mistake and an act of desperation on the Angel’s part.

  • Gallo says:

I agree with Mike and or Horton. There are guys out there that are just as good for a better price. We need to add a few guys to build a better team. Peavy, Gonzales, Dunn, GA. Any money left over Manny if he will trade off at DH with Vlady. Can’t imagine our defensive liabilities with both Manny and Vlady in the field at the same time.

  • Milik the red says:

My feeling is that if the Red Sox had really made a decient offer to Tex, they would already have signed him. rumors of them offering 185 mil are just that . Rumors. I think their offer was more in the four or five year range. Boras is just trying to squeeze as much out as he can. I dont see the Sox going to eight or ten years.
I would like to see the Angels trade for Peavy, that would be an exceptional rotation

  • Milik the red says:

Stephen is correct in that the Sox have owned that Angels in the playoffs.
Of course that was true with the Yankees over the Sox untill it changed. Stephen should not be so cocky, history has a way of making you pay for having a big mouth.

  • tekasam says:

Been a Sox fan for 60 years -..and the Jerkees are just lying in the bushes, waiting to jump. MARK THOSE WORDS !! They throw money around and make some foolish FA decisions..but they stop at NOTHING to get the players they and their fans want

  • jcrick says:

8 to 10 years for M-Tex @195 mil!!!! to much KASH and way too many years, let the Red Sox get saddled with that contract. Get all these high priced players to the Northeast so they can go belly up in the play-offs. Hey Tony put together a trade that would bring Gonzalez & Peavy to the Angels and sign Fuentes.

  • Michael Heaslet says:

We really need a home run threat but everyone seems to forget how important a GOOD FIELDING first baseman is to us. Kotchman and Tex made our infieild better than it is. Let’s don’t get a first baseman that’s a liability on the field. What about getting Kotchman back???
