Angels say they’re done with Tex

December 21st, 2008, 4:18 pm · 28 Comments · posted by Mark Whicker, ocregister.com

Angels communications vice president Tim Mead confirmed a report by ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that the club is no longer pursuing first baseman Mark Teixeira.

“The offer has been withdrawn,” Mead said, referring to a bid that was estimated at eight years, $160 million.

The Red Sox had said the same thing last week, which would leave Teixeira to a field of pursuers including the Washington Nationals, the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees.

I hope this is just a tactical play, I really would like to see Tex back with the Angels. I blame Boras and hope the same thing that happened with A-Rod happens here. He’ll most likely end up with Boston or NY, I do not think the Nats or O’s would be his first choice. Just like in Texas and Atlanta he won’t make them instant winners.

  • AngelsFan says:

Good riddance to a guy only focused on the almighty dollar. Bring me players that want to play for the Angels, not some jackass that is worried about his paycheck after Arte Moreno offered him 160 million reasons to play in Anaheim.

Arte, thanks for making the effort - the fans appreciate it. However, I’d rather you go spend that money(my season ticket money) on solid performers that will work hard to help us win and not complain about he last dollar in their paycheck.

  • Ralph Boyer says:

I think the withdraw is dignifying for the Angels. 20+million a year is outrageous when people are losing their houses. Boras, what kind of bubble do you live in? Get Peavey, the first baseman from the reds or the Padres, we can beat the sox, we just need to peak at the right time.

  • Neil says:

Arte…We did win a WS with great chemistry, This Angels fan appreciates what you are doing and you offered a ton to Tex and good riddance to him if he chooses to stay back east.
Go get peavy A gonzalez and fuentes, we’ll beat the sox and we will have the last laugh while waving bye bye to tex and the sox.

    go Halos

  • David Reynolds says:

Smart move by the Angels. I really get the feeling Tex and Boras are just using the Angels to drive up the price for the Red Sox. I think if Tex had any desire to come back to the Angels a deal would have been struck already.

Plus, as good as he has been, the numbers being thrown around lately don’t add up to his performance from the last couple of years.

  • Angels on the fly says:

The Angels should have had more of an idea whether Tex would sign with them when they gave up Casey Kotchman. Obviously Tex had no plans to sign with the Angels and the fact that he is dragging this out for more money only hurts the Angels chances of signing someone else. They need to cut their losses and move on. Tex is good, but he does not deserve the kind of contract he is likely to end up with. But, Kendry Morales is not the answer at first. If that’s the best we can do, we’re going to have a long year….

  • Brian (Fullerton) says:

Good move. A Tex contract would have tied up the organization for at least eight years. That’s a big gamble (all eggs in one basket). Thinking long term, you have Vlad’s and Lackey’s contracts to think of next year. Give Morales a chance. Keep your compensatory draft picks to restock the farm and lessen any blows in a trade for Peavy. With the economy so uncertain, play it safe for this year. Hate to say it, but I surmise that all we need right now is a #5 starting pitcher and a solid reliever. Thought: Randy Johnson (type B, not offered arbitration) closing in on 300 victories, only one year contract, good for ticket sales….

  • Ironside says:

How long can you let a contract negotiation hold freeze your organization from making offseason moves. I agree with the Angels, this fish doesn’t want to be reeled in, cut bait and recast your reel.

  • ripcurl says:

So long and good riddance! Great move, Arte!

  • Moron says:

Arte is smart. Don’t break the bank on Texeira. Signing him now would have been like buying OC Real Estate in 2007. Free Agent prices are going to go down. Being saddled with a mercenary that wants 8+ years at 160 million plus would be stupid.
It’s time to find out what the farm system has and then go after one or two free agents at 60 cents on the dollar (compared to 2008 prices) in 2009 & 2010.
We hear how wonderful the farm system is, lets see what it has.

    Good for you Arte!

  • Brian says:

My problem with this is the Angels just re-signed Juan Rivera. I like Juan but that kind of ruins things for signing most of the other free agent big bats. Manny is a left fielder/DH type. Dunn and Burrell also. Who else is there? Will the Angels make some big trade that gets them a #5 pitcher and big hitter?

  • Bob E says:

Give the Angels credit for gambling in 2008 by bringing Teixeira to the Angels. It didn’t work out, but it’s better than wondering “What if the Angels had acquired Teixeira?” I enjoyed watching him play, but you have to have players that want to be part of your team.

The Angels aren’t going to turn their hitting woes around until the change their approach and adopt a more patient hitting philosopshy like they did in 2002. Aggressiveness play is fun to watch, but you need to make the opposing team’s pitcher work for his outs. When you have two strikes after two pitches thrown, the pitcher owns you.

  • Nate says:

I was hoping they would be able to bring Teixeira back, but the numbers are just ridiculous. Just for giggles, I checked his “great” post-season numbers, he had seven hits, all singles…hardly worth the asking price.

Expect Jered Weaver to be gone by spring training. Moreno and company have obviously had enough of Boras and won’t be dealing with him anymore.

I look forward to what the Halos can do now that the Boras waiting game is through.

  • Brian says:

“It’s time to find out what the farm system has”

I agree with that and that means giving Brandon Wood a starting job and let him actually play. No more bench player or playing a couple weeks and then on the bench. Look what he did in September. After a couple weeks he started to hit. Then back to the bench.

No prospect will ever amount to anything playing the way the Angels are playing these kids. Kendry Morales fulltime at first. Brandon Wood fulltime at third or shortstop. The two of them can be really good if given a real chance. I get tired of hearing them attacked when neither has been given a true chance.

I’ve kept up on Brandon for most of his minor league career. He needs a couple weeks to get his swing going and then he hits. At least give him half a season like the washed up veterans always seem to get.

  • tedlai says:

Angels are right to cut ties now instead of being used as bargaining chip for Boras and Tex. They made a very generous offer and the efforts to try to sign Tex will be appreciated by Angels fans. It is smarter to allocate the resources to performers who want to be Angels. Tex commanding A-rod and Barry size contracts is just ridiculous. byebye Tex, take your money and run with it. Thanks for the zero championship you helped Angels won.

  • Brian says:

“I checked his “great” post-season numbers, he had seven hits, all singles…hardly worth the asking price.”

You can put a lot of the blame on Figgins and Garret though. Figgins was okay in the last two games but did nothing the first two games. Garret hit just over .100 in the playoffs. I’d say that’s why he’s gone. They might as well have had Teix bat leadoff.

  • Brian (Fullerton) says:

The “not paying for Tex” silver lining: Payroll flexibility for years to come, SIX draft picks before the second round, and no excuse to jack up prices for everything involved in attending an Angel’s game. Looking forward to Wood, S. Rodriquez, Morales, Rivera to flame on or flame out.

  • Brian says:

“SIX draft picks before the second round”

Hold on there. That isn’t really true. Do you realize the first 15 teams in the draft are protected? And the Nationals and Orioles are in that group. The Red Sox will be near the end of the first round. The Angels get the last pick. If the Yankees sign Teix they already drafted two Type A players. Is Teix ranked higher than Sabathia? Their first round pick goes to the team with the higher ranked player.

Too bad these lousy teams get so much help. If they didn’t and the Nationals signed Teix we could get the first overall pick.

  • RC says:

What a guy Stephen, just like a typical Boston slug. The Sox win the WS twice in the past 4 years and now all of a sudden you guys can beat your chest, how about being a bit humble huh? The Sox went 86 years with nothing so instead of thinking the Sux are God’s gift to baseball think again. Oh and if Tex wants that much money then he can split and join the Sux. I guess I just don’t see ARod money for a guy who only bats .290 with about 32 HR’s. That is hardly worth an ARod type contract.

  • Brian (Fullerton) says:

OK, probably SIX draft picks before the second round. Sabathia is ranked higher meaning it would be the NYY second rounder, but the Yanks are NOT going to sign Tex. And yes if BAL or WAS gets him, it would also be a second rounder (WAS #1, BAL #5) still pretty good. But none of those things will happen. Tex will be a Red Sox next year. Mark my words - probably in the next couple of days. Also, Garland needs to sign with a team other than the Angels to get the supplemental sandwich pick. In any case, it is great news for the farm system, and all Angel fans.

  • Chuck says:

I’m just glad that we finally have closure on the Tex charade and the Angel’s can now move on with their plans, B, C or D, what ever they are. Tex obviously never really seriously wanted to be here. There are now rumors floating about that the Angels may be interested in one of the Chisox two hitters, Dye or Konerko. Please not the declining Konerko. Let Morales get a shot at first base, he was tearing up the winter league. Many analysts are very high on Woods, so lets see what he can do. Give him 3rd base, unless he can be packaged in a Peavy deal which would arguable give the Halos the best staff in baseball.

  • Ryan says:

I know we are all trying to stay positive about losing Tex, but let’s be honest, his departue will be a huge loss. He will be a great player for years to come, which only makes his inevitable signing with Boston that much more hard to swallow.Angel fans should appreciate all the effort the front office made to keep him.I would suspect we’ll now pick up Fuentes to bolster the bull pen, and explore the trade market for Peavy. I’m all in support of giving Wood and Morales a chance to finally proove it on an everyday basis, but let’s face it, our offense will probably be a continual problem again in 09. One potential name not being mentioned much is Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto… Whatever happens, don’t expect the Angels to sit on their hands. Is it April yet?

  • Tony says:

Great move Arte………Tex isn’t a proven winner and appears not to be a team player……Make a deal for Peavy and A. Gonzalez, (Weaver/Boras, Aybar, Morales and Wood), sign Fuentes and Dunn and we’ll be set…..Remember Matthews won’t be ready to go until May or June due to his surgery and then he can be the fifth outfielder.

  • matt says:

Everybody needs to stop with the “trade for Peavy and Gonzalez” nonsense. Kevin Towers already said that he WOULD NOT TRADE GONZALEZ. get over it!

that being said… i’d love for the Angels to sign Dunn and someone like Juan Cruz for the ‘pen. Add a 5th starter (via trade?) and you’re set. I say trade Figgy to open up a spot for Wood.

    Aybar SS
    Morales 1B
    Guerrero DH
    Dunn LF
    Hunter CF
    Napoli C
    Rivera RF
    Kendrick 2B
    Wood 3B

  • Brian (Fullerton) says:

I can’t help but think about the movie “A beautiful Mind” when ‘John Nash’ contemplates game theory when a blonde and four brunettes walk into the bar. If they all go for the blonde they all lose, it would be better off if each goes for one of the brunettes. Tex is the blonde….. There are lots of brunettes out there…..

  • Tony A (Anaheim) says:

I like Matt’s lineup. We can do it without Tex. Too bad we traded a future allstar in Casey Kotchma so lets not make it worse by trading three future franchise players Wood,Aybar and Morales. If Scioscia will give these guys a couple of months of playing everyday I think they will show us what they can do. What we don’t need is to trade for some washed up so called power hitter like Konerko.

  • Cindy says:

These last few weeks sitting back and watching the Tex/Boras dance play out has been eye awakening. Tex was a player I had great respect for but this has been nothing but a game and the “prize” will go to the highest bidder. The real shame was losing Kotch over him, the fans are still devastated over it. Come on Arte, did you not know ahead of time that Tex’s wife wanted him to go to an east coast team or did you not realize that with Boras as his agent that it would end up being an exercise in greed? it has been sickening to watch, and I can truly say that if all they are after is money, then by all means have a great time in Boston or New York. I hope it makes his wife very happy.

  • Drew says:

The Angels don’t walk away empty handed; they get two draft picks as compensation for losing Teixeira, which is a potentially bigger return than Kotchman.

I give the team credit for trying to stay competitive, and not adopting the mindset of a second tier market team, the way previous ownership did.

It was our misfortune that both the Yankees and Red Sox had a need for a corner infielder this year…. hard to compete with those bottomless payrolls.
