Mark Teixeira won’t be an Angel in 2009. And it seems more and more likely Manny Ramirez won’t be playing
in Southern California next season unless it’s as a visiting player.
The free-agent outfielder, who has seemingly just been waiting for fellow Scott Boras client Teixeira to pick which team is going to pay him, has his eyes on New York.
The New York Daily News reports that Ramirez has told friends he expects to get a three-year offer from the Yankees.
Impacto Deportivo takes it one step further, reporting Ramirez has a three-year, $75 million offer in hand with an announcement of his signing with the Yankees expected shortly.
As mlbtraderumors.com documents, the Dominican Republic newspaper has a pretty decent track record when it comes to breaking recent big signings.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman shot down the Impacto Deportivo story early Monday in a text message that stated: “Not true.”
The Dodgers made Ramirez a two-year, $45 million offer early in the process and since have allegedly been waiting for Boras to make the next move.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said all the right things about Ramirez last week, but GM Tony Reagins said there was only a slim chance of the Angels obtaining him. I for one don’t think the Teixeira situation changes that scenario.
The Angels are already paying three starting outfielders hefty salaries — Torii Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero, Gary Matthews Jr. — with Guerrero likely to be an almost-fulltime DH. And recently re-signed Juan Rivera isn’t going to be paid $4 million to be a fourth outfielder, backup DH and/or platoon first baseman with Kendry Morales (who’s a switch-hitter, anyway). But that’s what a Manny signing by the Angels would produce.
I can’t see Manny getting more than $20 million for two years. It is in the owner’s best interest to ensure that Manny does not profit from his behavior in Boston. His contract WILL set the precedent for all future ballplayers. If he gets ‘paid’ then it will encourage other would-be malcontents to follow suit. Not to mention the apparent loathing of his agent, Scott Boras, who many believe orchestrated the Manny exit from Boston. I am sure there is some kind of unspoken collusion that will prevent a big contract that would otherwise go to this amazing hitter. There will be no smoking gun and the economy certainly provides a readymade cover story – plausible deniability. Don’t think it can happen? What team did Barry Bonds play for last year?
WHY WOULD ANY BASEBALL FAN PAY BIG BUCKS JUST TO SEE PLAYERS WHO CANNOT HIT OR WORST TEAM WHO CANNOT WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. GIVE ME SOME MILLIONS AND I SHOW YOU HOW BAD I AM. COMING SOON, TICKETS WILL INCREASE AGAIN
