It’s more than worth taking a look at and thinking back to 1979, when Rod Carew was the Angels first baseman, Brian Downing was an All-Star catcher, Frank Tanana and Nolan Ryan were on the mound, and Don Baylor was American League Most Valuable Player.
All Groove did in 1979 was hit 36 homers, drive in 139 runs and bat .296. Bobby Grich hit 30 homers. Downing batted .326 and Carew .318.
Grich and Disco Dan Ford had 101 RBIs apiece for the 88-74 Angels club that lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the playoffs.
Jim Fregosi was the Angels manager when they won that first division title — not that it did him much good less than two years later when the club, struck by injuries, struggled early and he was fired.
And, oh yeah, back in ‘79 Scott Boras was a 26-year-old former minor-league infielder, five years removed from getting Tim Belcher an unheard-of $150,000 signing bonus.
