With a pair of trades and a free-agent signing Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs are apparently clearing the
decks for the arrival of free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley … and, possibly, San Diego Padres right-hander Jake Peavy.
Chicago has created about $9 million in salary room by sending starter Jason Marquis to the Colorado Rockies for reliever Luis Vizcaino, then dealing second baseman/outfielder Mark DeRosa to the Cleveland Indians for three prospects.
The Cubs also signed utility infielder/outfielder Aaron Miles, late of the St. Louis Cardinals, to replace the versatile DeRosa (who might play third for the Indians).
Bradley (pictured, reacting after striking out against the Angels with Jeff Mathis in the background), is exactly what the Cubs need, according to the Sporting News’ Gerry Fraley.
And, when the Cubs and the Padres were talking about Peavy at the Winter Meetings, the moves of Marquis and DeRosa were seen as prerequisites to a deal.
The Daily Herald’s Bruce Miles writes the Cubs might move Vizcaino to another team, and that any Peavy acquisition will have to wait until Chicago’s ownership situation is settled.
The Angels would be foolish not to go after Jake Peavy. He’s a #1 starter who knows how to pitch and won’t ruin your teams payroll because he’s under contract and affordable considering his value. Yeah, you’ve got to give up some prospects to get him but prospects = Maybe’s? Whereas Jake Peavy is a proven commodity!!!
He’s also use to pitching for a weak offensive team which is just what the Angels have if they don’t make some major purchases like MANNY RAMIREZ. If the angels aren’t going to do anything offensively which is ridiculous! Then they better go with the “Old Theory” that good pitching beats good offense and pick up Peavy.
