And there goes Milton Bradley

January 5th, 2009, 1:46 pm · 12 Comments · posted by sammiller

Three years, $30 million, according to ESPN.

Who’s left, among players who could conceivably if you squint help the Angels in some way?

  • Adam Dunn
  • Nomar Garciaparra
  • Jason Giambi
  • Orlando Cabrera
  • Ty Wigginton
  • Garret Anderson
  • Cliff Floyd
  • Manny Ramirez
  • Rocco Baldelli
  • Jim Edmonds
  • Eric Hinske
  • Ken Griffey, Jr.
  • Bobby Abreu
  • Jason Varitek
  • Paul Byrd
  • Oliver Perez
  • Derek Lowe
  • Juan Cruz
  • Andy Pettitte
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Ben Sheets
  • John Smoltz
  • Randy Wolf

Who’m I missing, and who do you want?

Incidentally, Ken Rosenthal suggests that the Burrell-Bradley dominoes go one tile further, with Jason Giambi (also pursued by the Rays) now a possibility for the A’s.

Ben Sheets could be had cheep for a 1 to 2 year deal. He needs to prove he’s not still injured. If he’s healthy then we’ve got another ace… if hurt then give the fifth spot to one of the kids.

As far as a bat… either Dunn or Giambi would look nice at DH.

  • Mark Whicker, ocregister.com says:

If you lead the league in OPS as Milton did, you deserve the contract he got. Health is the biggest issue with him. I think he’ll respond to Piniella and the whole atmosphere there and do very well.

Of those names, Wigginton jumps out _ not as the best player but as a versatile guy with some pop. There might be other places besides Anaheim where he wouldl get more time.

As for the Scioscia poll I’m sure there is some formula to come up with some abstraction about what he contributes. The truth is that everything the Angels do is implemented by Scioscia in some way, especially in the catcher/’pitcher relationship. So you can put some artificial number on it, but you can’t measure it.

  • Andre Mouchard says:

Adam Dunn for $10 million a year would be a steal for anybody, particularly an AL team. Wigginton could really help the Angels, but only if he’s willing to continue his niche as a super sub at 3B, LF, 1B and DH (hey, he can even play 2B in a pinch). If he’s looking to be a one-position, full-time starter somewhere, that’s not such a great fit for the Angels. The other name that jumps up to me on that list is Derrick Lowe… Lowe pitching in front of a middle infield combo of Aybar/Itzuris/Rodriguez could be spectacularly good, and he’d give the Angels flexibility to trade either Weaver or Saunders for a bat. I’m just going from memory, but I don’t think Lowe missed a start the last few years… But the worth of a Lowe deal depends on the dollars. Finally, though I’m a Dodgers fan, Manny makes more sense for an AL team than he does for the Dogs. And I say that even as I put on that dang itchy Manny wig.

Bradley will implode…either on the field or in the dugout. Bad move by the Cubbies. Might help us in a pursuit of Peavy as it eats up some major dollars of theirs.
I like Dunn and Giambi as well. 4 years/$40M for Dunn or an incentive-laden one year for Giambi. If the A’s sign Giambi (as rumored), they don’t look half bad…with Cust, Holliday, Giambi,…at the core of their lineup. If Chavez and/or Crosby bounce back, yikes !!!

  • Mark says:

I agree with G.T. Bradley has never been a reliable player. Even last season he couldn’t be counted on day in and day out. When he is in the lineup he is good, but that’s such a rarity. I would take Adam Dunn’s worst seasons over Milton Bradley’s best.

The free agent that I would be most interested in adding if I were a team is John Smoltz. The main thing that makes him great is that he can be used as a starter or a reliever which ever you happen to need the most. Obviously he has the same problem that Bradley has in staying on the field, but if he signs on so that he only has to play a couple months it’s a good risk to take.

  • TJ says:

    Milton B.- RISP=278
    Adam D.-RISP=241
    Garrett A.-RISP=338
Juan Rivera has a steel rod in his thigh- he won’t make through the season and Willits is batting 194. The Angels should have never let GA go. Come on NewYork- pick up GA and make the Angels pay!

  • AngelsFan says:

As the big names have started dropping, there’s fewer places for GA to go. Do not be surprised at all if the Angels end up signing him for much cheaper than if they offered arbitration. They may have played this one out brilliantly. Just look at what Pat Burrell got - $8m per year, which is at least $4m less than what he would’ve gotten in a good market. GA goes for in the neighborhood of $6m.

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

The Angels already gave GA $3 million to buy out his 2009 option. Give him $6 million more — which I think is a real insult to a still fine, productive player who is such a part of franchise history — and that’s a million more than Burrell will make in 2009. And I don’t think Boras clients give hometown discounts — I could be wrong.

  • johnny holden says:

I really hope the angels are the dark horse in the Manny Ramirez sweepstakes. I know angels value defense but if the angels want to win another title they must sign Ramirez. and i understand it has its down sides. like signing a 36 year old outfielder with an already aging outfield. ramirez is an OFFENSIVE upgrade from Teixiera. Manny is actually clutch. just imagine ramirez in left hunter in center and vladamir in right. what an outfield!

  • Earl Bloom, staff writer says:

johnny holden: I love that outfield … about three or four years ago. Hunter would need oxygen between innings or a motorcycle to help him cover the gaps. …. I really think the big problem here is the Angels’ inability to develop an everyday outfielder through the farm system, which has delivered so much at other positions. … I like the idea of getting either Jim Edmonds or Mark Kotsay if they’re willing to accept reduced roles and paychecks. Sure they’re older but they can still play the outfield … and they bat lefty.

  • Tom Smelser says:

Adam Dunn is the only one you want . The Angels as currently constituted are one of the worst hitting teams in baseball. He would help with the power shortage.
Forget speed this team no longer has any.
As long as the Angels have rocket scientists like, Aybar, Vladdy and Figgins, we go nowhere in the postseason. The situation is further exaserbated by the worst hitting coach-and dumbest -in baseball, Mickey Hatcher.

  • Brian says:

It doesn’t matter that Milton Bradley is gone. Mike Scioscia would never let him on his team. It would be Jose Guillen 2. They’re the same guy. Both would help the offense a lot but both are hotheads.
