Had trouble with the “post a comment” link so I’ll do it this way….Giambi kept his slugging pct. above .500 every day since late May and is now four home runs from 400 career. He is not the guy Angels fans want to see in the box with a game-tying run on second in the eighth inning. This is good stuff for all of us who are tired of the division race being over by Aug. 1. The A’s got Holliday, tried to get Furcal, have some alleged young talent coming, might have found a closer in Brad Ziegler although it’s probably too early to tell, and could push the Angels hard.
I kind of like it being over by Aug 1st.
Mark, can you give us any idea why the Angels wouldn’t have taken a chance on Giambi? He’s still a slugger, a left-handed bat, plays a decent first base(no date on whether Morales will truly be better) and can certainly DH as well. You can also rotate Morales in the left/right field. This one I just don’t get but maybe there’s something better in the works, although Reagins denies that. For $5m, this seems like a no-brainer especially after paying Shea Hillenbrand $6m to do absolutely nothing.
Mark, I tried to find some stats on Eric Ziegler, but couldn’t. Who is he?
It’s Brad Ziegler, as noted in Mark’s post. He’s got a great arm which allowed them to let Huston Street go.
Maybe Hillenbrand’s flameout spooked them out of getting Giambi, although that was a Stoneman move. The Angels don’t like getting somebody else’s players, especially older ones who make a modicum of money (by today’s standards) Like you, I’m agonstic about Morales….I think I did call him Eric Ziegler and somebody bailed me out. It’s Brad Ziegler and he had 11 saves and a 1.09 ERA as the closer down the stretch. We’ll see what happens for a full season. No relation to Matilda Ziegler, who sometimes plays Mr. Bean’s girlfriend.
With respect to Hillenbrand being from Stoneman, I’m wondering how much influence Stoneman still has on the organization. Why else is he still on the payroll? Yes, Reagins fixed the Matthews debacle and traded for Teixeira but I still feel as though Stoneman has a large impact on decisions being made, at least in the near-term of Reagins tenure.
I would say some impact, but not as much as Scioscia. I can’t see Stoneman signing Hunter for $90 mill, five years.
