Mr. Angel has his degree.
Tim Salmon dropped by the Orange County Register on Wednesday to speak to sponsors of his charity golf classic next month.
Salmon, 40, looked like he could step right back into Mike Scioscia’s lineup tomorrow. His career OBP (.385) and OPS (.883) sure would help the Angels.
Always gracious, he granted an interview — which we’ll have more from on this blog later.
“I just graduated from college around Christmas,” said Salmon, who retired from the Angels following the 2006 season.
He went back to Grand Canyon University in Arizona — from where the Angels drafted him in the 1989 third round – and got his BA in applied management, completing a project 20 years in the making.
“It was a longtime goal of mine,” he said, explaining that he already had an honorary degree. “I actually went back to class and did it.”
The 11th annual Tim Salmon Golf Classic will be at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club on Feb. 9. It supports the work of Canyon Acres and Laurel House, serving abused and at-risk youth in Southern California.

What if Salmon did come back? We looked at this some weeks ago:

how about we bring Timmy back as hitting coach?
Matt for the win! +1 to that.
Call me an idiot (well, get in line to call me an idiot), but I love the brief, honest follow-up on the retired sports star. Salmon always struck me as a good guy. But when I read that he didn’t Cadillac it at school — that he went to classes like everybody else and did the work because it mattered to him — well, that’s proof, I suppose. In any case, it’s a very nice little get.
And +2 on Salmon as hitting instructor. If he could teach guys like Aybar and Izturis and Rivera and, well, every Angel other than Vlad and Hunter and Napoli to watch more ball fours…
fun story…
This past year (around September, I believe) Salmon was hanging around the cage during batting practice before the game and talking with some of the young guys. That night, Sean Rodriguez hit a homer and Brandon Wood hit 2.
Coincidence? Doubtful.
Bring in Timmy!
We need the former Angel players at Strawberry Farms Golf Course to show up and inspire all of us… Old Guys Rule!
