Henderson, Rice get HOF call

January 12th, 2009, 11:06 am · Post a Comment · posted by Earl Bloom, staff writer

Watching minutes ago as the new MLB Network makes its first live news report Monday morning, we learn Rickey Henderson (pictured) and Jim Rice have been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Henderson, in his first year of eligibility, received 94.8 percent of the writers’ votes. Rice, in his 15th year on the ballot, received 76.4 percent. A 75 percent total means election.

Andre Dawson (67 percent) and Bert Blyleven (62.7 percent) finished third and fourth.

For an instant reaction that really takes a stand, Halos Heaven has one worth checking out.

My reaction: Anything less than 98 percent for Henderson is a joke, but I have seen it before. I don’t know Jim Rice but I know of Jim Rice and thought him an impact hitter in his day. I think the same thing about Andre Dawson, and he was a much more complete player.

I am disgusted once again that Blyleven is still waiting.

More to come later.
