Gabe Kapler will be the Rays’ fourth (or fifth) outfielder in 2009, as he signed a one year deal that will pay him $1 million.
Kapler had a nice bounceback season for the Brewers, after taking a season off to manage. His .301/.340/.498 line is good enough to play full-time, but I’m skeptical he can repeat that at 33. Not only do his 229 at-bats barely clear the Randy Winn Threshold, his performance is well ahead of his career line, and he hasn’t played full-time since 2004. Still, for $1 million, a practically perfect backup who can play any outfield spot.
