Napoli making slow progress

PEORIA, Ariz.

Catcher Mike Napoli continues his recovery from off-season shoulder surgery. He is “making a lot of progress” in his throwing program, according to  Angels manager Mike Scioscia, but is having the usual soreness that comes at such an early stage. He is only throwing approximately 90 feet at this point and needs to progress to long-tossing up to 200 feet before he will start throwing to bases in fielding drills.

That “could take another couple weeks,” Scioscia said — which makes it seem very unlikely Napoli will be ready to catch when the season starts on April 6. Scioscia called it “a stretch” to think Napoli will be ready to play every day “right out of the chute” and said the next couple weeks will give some clear signs on whether it’s “a probability or a long shot” to think Napoli can be on the active roster on Opening Day.
