Adenhart shirt sales removed

April 20th, 2009, 9:19 am · 16 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

The fan site AngelsWin.com has removed a message board thread where an Angels fan was selling unauthorized Nick Adenhart tribute t-shirts.

The shirts  were fairly controversial on our blog this weekend. The thread where the shirts were for sale ($15.75, including shipping) came down sometime yesterday. I asked Chuck Richter, AngelsWin’s executive editor, and he said the thread was first moved to a private forum for review, then removed completely “because it is not something Angelswin.com sponsored or should be affiliated with.”

Dan, who goes by the user name Gambit92 at AngelsWin.com, explained why he was selling the shirts:

“As we know there is no way to get any Adenhart shirts or jerseys through MLB. I wanted to do this as a tribute to a young man who is struck down in the prime of life. These were meant for fellow Angel fans to wear as a tribute. I am a large guy and the team store doesn’t carry much for me. They may eventually make an Adenhart shirt to sell but not in a size I can wear comfortably. I am only collecting money needed to make and ship these and nothing more. I have no malicious intentions, I am just a big and tall guy who wanted to make a shirt that fits that pays tribute to a player who was killed before he was able to blossom into an all star.”

    Much ado about nothing.

I echo that there were no Adenhart shirts available, even within hours of the accident. but if anybody is going to sell any kind of shirt they should be doing it at cost. nobody should profit

or take an Angels jersey / shirt and get it custom lettered somewhere else than Angel Stadium or mlb.com, which won’t allow it.

better yet the Angels should have a giveaway day and hand them out at the gates.

I’m glad you posted this Sam. Thank-you! It’s a shame because there was really no need for the controversy in the first place.

  • PUMA says:

What a shame! Here baseball, the Angels are dictating free enterprise. Must be OBAMA supporters. Lets continue to take away rights & freedom from America who is no longer a free country in the eyes of this administration & the Angels organization.

  • Randy says:

I’m sorry PUMA, but the Angels did no such thing.

  • JoJo says:

i am happy to here that Angelwin.com will no longer be sponsoring the sale of these shirts as it was a travesty. I hope Nick’s family is doing okay and that they do not have to be pestered by this stuff again.

    • Randy says:

Good grief you’re incorrigible. Angelswin didn’t sponsor anything. But how is it the Adenharts have been “pestered” by this? Unbelievable!

      • JoJo says:

Randie, please dont insult me. I just think its bad that the adenharts have had to read and hear about their son in this way. im sorry if you dont agree with me. God bless you.

        • Randy says:

Tell it to Mr Miller who decided this non-issue was worthy of stirring up controversy over. What makes you think the Adenharts heard about this in the first place? And what about this is anything other than a fan’s attempt to honor their son? And Jojo, I didn’t insult you. But thanks for spelling my name incorrectly.

          • JoJo says:

Randy sorry for spelling your name wrong. I dont type so good.

for Nicks parents i think its just bad that they dont have control over what people are doing with their son’s memories. that’s all. maybe they Just want to grieve in peace.

            • Randy says:

OK, I don’t get your concern. How the public expresses their own grief is not in control of the family. It never is. Nothing about this precludes the family from dealing with their own grief in peace.

    Real cutting edge reporting, Sam.

There were some kids with a lemonade stand this weekend not to far from where my parents live. They had #34 signs raising money for MADD.

Hopefully you’ll expose them for being the disgusting, profiteering thugs that they are.

Selling unauthorized T-Shirts is a big scam. As far as just making enough to mail them out… THAT IS BULL. Most of these tshirt people buy the shirts for 4 or 5 bucks and dont have $7.00 into them. So figure out how much he is making by what he charges. Its one thing to have unauthorized merchandise on living people but it is an insult to the deceased and their family. Stop scamming off the departed and Go get a job!

    • Randy says:

I love the unauthorized angle. Who is supposed to authorize this exactly and why? This is a group of fans that are buying shirts AT COST!!!! from another fan who wanted to have a way of expressing honor to a fallen player from his favorite sports team. This is not some arena parking lot shirt vendor who is just looking to make a quick buck. Your post is utter nonsense.

    • KrazedAngelFan says:

From what I understood he was using a website that was charging that much so if you wanted to be mad at someone be mad at the company that was charging him that much per shirt….

  • Jim says:

Here’s what I think is interesting…if there’s nothing wrong with selling the shirts, why did angelswin remove the thread? Apparently they realized that it was a bad idea.

Why are people still defending them (angelswin and the guy selling the shirts) when they’ve stopped defending themselves?
