The Angels brought up power-hitting prospect Brandon Wood from Triple-A Salt Lake today, but Manager Mike Scioscia said his stay could be a short one. The Angels will need two fill-in starting pitchers on this homestand and both figure to come from the minor leagues, so Wood could be sent right back down.
Also, Scioscia said he’s not ready to scrap his current configuration of Chone Figgins at third and a Maicer Izturis/Erick Aybar mix and match at shortstop.
Here is tonight’s lineup (and it’s a familiar one):
3B Chone Figgins
2B Howie Kendrick
DH Maicer Izturis
LF Bobby Abreu
CF Torii Hunter
1B Kendry Morales
C Mike Napoli
RF Gary Matthews Jr.
SS Erick Aybar

Scioscia knows best, I guess. Seems a bit frustrating to bring up the young fella only to have him serve as water/pasta boy (he’ll bring Mike his “in-game” rigatoni, methinks).
That line-up is a joke. If anything bat Wood at the DH if you’re going to waste it on Macier.
I like Izturis, but to keep Brandon Wood on the bench? Why not just leave him in Triple-A to keep getting his at-bats? He’s been up with the big club enough times to know what it’s like in the Bigs. Bring him up and play him … or leave him in Salt Lake and bring up somebody who can pitch.
They should have left him in AAA. Hey lets take our guy with the hottest bat in AAA and invite him up to watch us play. Dumb Dumb Dumb. He needs to play, play now and play everyday.
The untold story is that the coaching staff thinks Brandon is trying to hit home runs too much so they brought him up to work with Hatcher for a few days to get his swing cleaned up. The hope is that by next week when Brandon returns to SLC he’ll be swinging the Angel way.
if thats the case then the angles are about the dumbest orgainization in the majors. trying to hit hrs? HE WAS HITTING FREAKIN HRS!!! 4 of them in 26 ab’s. hitting .346 with 4bb and 6 ko. he doesnt need any work.
What is hitting the angel way. Limp wristed like Macier Izturis and Erick Aybar? Missing bunts? Hitting weak groundouts? What a joke!!!
Up until you wrote “What a joke!!!” I thought you had missed the humor intended.
Yeah, I’m not going to say that “the angel way” of hitting is . . well, I’ll leave that alone.
I actually LIKE Izturis in the lineup.
I’d prefer it if he was replacing Aybar, though, at least Izturis has been money with RISP.
What I don’t like is leaving a blossoming 25-30HR hitter on the bench when the only thing that’ll counter the Angels decimated pitching staff is solid run production 1-9. We haven’t seen that yet this season, and honestly, with the exception of Hunter, do you think anyone pitcher is scared of that lineup?
I like Micey too… a lot! Just not as a 3 hitter.
Agreed!! I’m just concerned that the long term projections - - Wood still blocked at 3B into perpetuity, MAtt Brown stuck behind him - - and these are both the “maybe” variety - - we’re all putting a lot of emphasis and pressure on Wood to be the savior - - no different than what Mike S is doing w/ Kendry, Kendrick, Aybar, etc. Wood isn’t the only answer, but it’s one piece to a puzzle with several long term question marks.
What happens next year, without Vladdy? Torii, a year older, a year slower? What pop will the team have then? it’s time to do something for the future now, because if we find out this year that Wood ISN’T the guy we all really hope he is? we’re doubly-screwed.
