Stephen C. Smith of FutureAngels.com was in Tempe today, and shot video of Ervin Santana’s bullpen session. Check out the video at his Web site here.

Gotta love that pop.

That didn’t look like an injured pitcher to me, even if he was throwing fastballs and changeups only.

  • He didn’t take me up on my suggestion that he try throwing left-handed.

Actually, Mark, there were some sliders in there too, I believe. The way the video was edited may not have made that evident.

And in the credits … The catcher was Nolan Brannon. The injured player standing at the plate with his arm in the sling was Leo Calderon. The pitching coach behind Ervin was Trevor Wilson, and the pitching coach next to the catcher was Zeke Zimmerman.

  • I’ll check the raw video in the morning to see if he threw any sliders.

You may also wish to check out the video I shot of “Shogun Batting Practice.” The link is on the FutureAngels.com home page.

The way it works is that two batting cages are placed side-by-side, facing two pitching machines side-by-side. One is right-handed, the other left-handed. It was explained to me that a batter must face one machine for four minutes, then go into the other cage for four minutes. The idea came from former Angels minor league hitting coordinator Ty Van Burkleo, who is now the hitting coach for the Seattle Mariners. Ty brought the idea back to the U.S. after playing in Japan, hence the name which apparently he gave it.

Does it serve any meaningful purpose? Your guess is as good as mine. If nothing else, it breaks up the monotony of the same batting practice routine every day.

This is great other than the fact that Ervin is tipping his pitches by announcing them.

  • Video of John Lackey’s Tuesday bullpen session is now on FutureAngels.com.

Ervin Santana is supposed to throw in an intrasquad game today. I’ll be there to tape it but I’m leaving for CA right after so it’ll probably be tonight or tomorrow before it’s online.
