Imaginary trade: Who hangs up first?

Here’s a question:

.

Brandon Wood for Jonathan Sanchez. Who hangs up first?

Jonathan Sanchez remains a big breakout candidate, a hard-throwing lefty whose deceptive delivery makes his fastball seem even faster.  He has trouble repeating his delivery and leaves loads of fastballs high and outside. The walks have killed him, but he’s extremely difficult to hit, fifth in baseball in Ks/9 in 2008. Dustin Moseley and Kelvim Escobar may be back soonish, but they may not be; they may be effective, and they may not be; and even if they are, the Angels have a new power lefty reliever who hasn’t even hit arbitration yet.

Meanwhile, the Giants’ offense has swine flu (timely!). If the Giants hope to win 90 games at the rate they have scored this season, they would need an ERA of 3.09, not so realistic. They need bats. Their third baseman, Pablo Sandoval, has handled the position well, but is more suited to first; their first baseman, Travis Ishikawa, is the world’s leading purveyor of outs. The Giants have some options for third in the minors, but nothing you worry about blocking yet. Brandon Wood fits perfectly, and he won’t be a free agent for five years still.

I know, I know. Nobody wants to trade Brandon Wood. I don’t want to trade Brandon Wood. But if they aren’t going to play him…

as a giants fan i have been thinking of this swap for the last 6 months. i know the angels want to get what they have invested in brandon wood, but if there is nowhere for this guy to play then you might as well get a need and a guy with very similar upside. there are a lot of giants fans that will have the same unwillingness to part with jonathan sanchez because he is so close to putting it all together…and when he does this guy could be a #1 on someone’s staff.

this swap makes the most sense because they fit eachother’s needs. the giants need young offensive players, while the angels need starting pitching, preferably younger talent as well. there is no messing around with adding or dumping tons of salary and there are no swaps of guarenteed all-star for prospect risks here either.

to me, most trades are incredebly one-sided and/or not meeting one of the teams needs. this deal is different and i think it would give both franchise’s exactly what they need today and for the next few years to come.

The Angels need hitters not pitchers at this juncture with Lackey and Santana ready to return. There is a place to play Wood, either shortstop or 3rd base. Now we just need to convince Mike Scosia that hitting homeruns is not a bad thing.

If can really play SS, why not call the pitching-rich Red Sox?

  • TribeFan says:

Brandon Wood to Tribe for DeRosa and a AAA pitcher.

    Any thoughts?

    • sammiller says:

DeRosa’s a great player to have around, but I wouldn’t trade the five more years you’d control Wood for a half-season of DeRosa. Sowers is no better than Dustin Moseley. So I’d say probably not.

  • TribeFan says:

    or even Jeremy Sowers?

why wouldn’t sanchez and possibly a conor gillaspie or Ryan Rohlinger or Travis Ishikawa suffice? At this point, i think that is top dollar for Wood…he hasn’t played himself into the MLB and there is no immediate spot for Brandon anytime soon…
