Veteran reliever Rudy Seanez has been working out at the Angels’ extended spring training camp in Arizona since signing a minor-league contract over a week ago.
Angels GM Tony Reagins said Seanez pitched in a camp game on Tuesday and “threw the ball really well.”
Reagins said the Angels continue to evaluate Seanez’s status but he could be assigned to a minor-league team within the next one to two weeks.
“He didn’t have any spring training so he’s just building up his arm strength,” Reagins said.
Seanez could become an experienced replacement for Scot Shields if the setup man’s knee injury sidelines him for an extensive period of time. Shields is turning to rehab and physical therapy to treat patellar tendinitis in his left knee with no timetable for his return.
But Reagins said Seanez’s progress will be measured “independent” of any need the Angels might have in their bullpen.
“We just want to make sure he’s pitching up to his capabilities,” Reagins said. “If he’s pitching well and an opportunity presents itself, then he’ll get that opportunity if it’s a fit.”
Seanez, 40, was 5-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 42 relief appearnaces for the Phillies last season but went unsigned as a free agent this winter and considered retirement before signing with the Angels earlier this month. Seanez was not on the Phillies’ playoff roster as they won the World Series.
