What do you think about this comment on Halos Heaven:
OK so I just got home and looked at the game log, and it looks like the Top of the 1st is a microcosm for the whole year:
C Figgins singled to right.
C Figgins caught stealing second, catcher to shortstop.
B Abreu walked.
T Hunter walked, B Abreu to second.V Guerrero flied out to right.
J Rivera walked, B Abreu to third, T Hunter to second.
R Quinlan struck out swinging.Basically Figgy getting on base and doing a lot better than people give him credit for.
Then the Angels making an out on the bases which they do FAR too much. Hunter doing well. Vlad failing miserably. Rivera doing well. And then a guy that has no right to even be playing in the minors [Quinlan] right now ends the bases loaded threat.
Does Soth realize Q’s OPS against lefties this year is hovering right around .300? WTF Soth call up Wood or S-Rod or just play K-Mo. This is ridiculous.
Fair? Not fair? Probably not 100 percent accurate, but certainly fair, as far as I’m concerned.
I think it’s unfair to put blame on a bench player for all of the ills suffered this year. Q has hardly had the number of at bats to say he has no place at all in major or minor league baseball.
If we’re being picky, why not put the blame on Figgins for his inability to steal 2nd. Or how about Abreu’s lack of power and Vlad’s lack of a strick zone.
Quinlan plays before Wood and Rodriguez because he has shown the ability to sit on the bench for long stretches at a time and play effectively whenever his day comes. Wood and Rodriguez are too young and unfamiliar with the major leagues to trust them with that kind of role.
Interesting, and good point WengWeng
When was the last time Quinlan was effective off the bench? 2006?
About the last time Speier was effective
Quinlan continuing to play says 1 thing, Kendry Morales is not trusted to hit against lefties.
Frankly, he hasn’t done much against righties either, and as a middle of the order guy, has been bad with risp.
They can’t stand pat with a singles hitting infield compounded by a struggling combination of mathis/napoli. If Arredondo is used to send a message, where is the message to the offense? It’s nowhere, as evidenced by tonight’s lineup.
Look, I think Quinlan being on a major league roster is an utter and absolute joke, but “Kendry Morales is not trusted to hit against lefties” seems to be a pretty solid policy position. Kendry Morales can’t hit lefties. At all. In his whole career. Seems to me the solution is to advise Gitmo to quit switch hitting, or find a way to get Wood or Rodriguez into a platoon with him. If they won’t acknowledge one of those reasonable solutions, Quinlan (whose presence I despise) is really no worse than Kendry against lefties.
Message to the offense? How about … hmmm… calling up Brandon Wood and putting him in the lineup every single day? Anyone? Bueller?
“Gitmo” — LOL! Funny how it’s Brandon Wood getting the stress position…
Sam- as a fan I look at it this way- Mike is not trying to win games if he hits Quinlan 6th ( forget about playing him at all). The absolute best you are going to get from Q is a single. I don’t care if its LH or RH pitcher or the guy is throwing underhanded, Quinlan has no business playing in any games, and I think he is a good guy who trys his best.
Can you see Boston or NY taking their utility guy and hitting him 6th?
Napoli was doing fine alternating between C and DH until Vlad returned. As soon as Napoli started playing every other day, his timing tanked and now he is in a slump although he is showing signs coming out of it with his recent HRs. Why Mathis is taking ABs from Nap is a total mystery.
They say that Mathis is Santana personal catcher - so be it, but that is a mystery too after Santana’s losses of 17 - 3 and 11 - 1 in recent games.
We need Napoli back to playing everyday, personal catcher nonsense noitwithstanding.
If the issue is getting Wood to play everyday than your beef is with the two players that stand in his way, Figgins and Aybar.
I honestly feel like the wheels have come off so far that the recovery, unless drastic, will be long and arduous. There’s no light at the end of this tunnel in terms of the Angels turning it around.
Lackey’s got the Free-Agent-itis, and is only thinking about next winter.
Santana forgot how to throw had, fast, and effectively.
Abreu isn’t what we wanted when we signed him
Vald is all but done.
Aybar is never going to be anything but a serviceable middle infielder with league-average or less offensive numbers.
Kendrick’s gotten better, but how much? He’ll still turn it around - - or so the story goes -(Hope Howards’ TV has a backup Ad plan)
The ‘pen…I love Shields. Hell, I even Love Speier. Those two guys are past their prime and probably not going to return to their glory. Everybody figured Arredondo out in his second time through.
It’s time to make some major moves: Let EVERYONE know they’re not untouchable, and make a big splash with a big exclamation point. I like the waivering of GMJr, or send him somewhere and eat the contract.
Go get Street from Colo. Talk to ‘em about Garrett Atkins, too, while you’re on the phone w/ ‘em.
btw? I know Atkins numbers. I just think he’s still got upside.
and GA also plays 1b guys…
Uhhhhh, there’s only one player from the Angels (past/present) that can be nicknamed GA, and that’s Garret Anderson.
I thought “upside” was a term reserved for prospects. After playing several seasons in Colorado I find it hard to believe there is “upside” in Garrett Atkins.
If there is “upside” it would have been Atkins going to Colorado not leaving there.
