Wood Watch 2009 (Now with more Arredondo!)

June 12th, 2009, 7:25 am · 2 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Brandon Wood was back at first base last night, the second time this week. (Stephen C. Smith says it’s no big deal.) He homered, struck out, popped out in the infield, grounded into a double play, grounded out. The homer came off Tony Barnette, a 25-year-old with a 6.82 ERA for the Reno Aces, who will someday be able to tell his grandchildren that he gave up a home run to the great Brandon Wood … and also to the great Terry Evans.

It was Wood’s 13th homer in 162 at bats, and he’s now batting .296/.375/.599, with 21 walks to 36 strikeouts.

More interesting, perhaps, was Jose Arredondo’s Triple A debut. He came into the ninth inning with a 6-2 lead and immediately hit the first two batters he faced. Ha. Then he got the next three guys: Ruben Gotay on strikes, Alex Romero on a grounder, Tony Clark on a flyout to right field. It took him 25 pitches, 11 of which were balls.

  • Let’s give Terry Evans a nod … After missing most of 2008 with a shoulder injury, he’s put up a decent .295/.343/.555. (He’s never taken a lot of walks.)

Any time you talk about a Salt Lake player, you need to see how he does away from his home park since it’s so hitter-friendly:

    Home: .295/.346/.516
    Away: .295/.339/.600

Evans isn’t the next Mickey Mantle, but he could be a useful fourth outfielder with some pop and speed. He’s played all three outfield positions in his minor league career.

  • quinlan's goofy swing says:

Wood or Rodriguez being called up is what I look forward to in regards to this team right now. Everything else, just seems to be like a broken record. You know what’s going to happen in just about every scenario, and it’s all negative.

That being said, I expect Reginald Willits to be called up so this bunting and cs epidemic is straightened out. Homeruns remove the ability to tinker with a game, and that is not why I tune in. You gotta be able to produce runs to win games, it’s too bad someone doesn’t recognize a homerun swing as the greatest producer of all.
