• In a few minutes, Chien-Ming Wang will take the mound for the Yankees. According to Baseball Prospectus, his first five starts this season are the worst first five starts in Major League history. (Or, at least since 1913.)

• Rangers GM Jon Daniels knows a lot more about his team’s finances than I do, and he’s still talking like a guy who plans to be buying at the trade deadline.

• Jorge Says No runs down the relief market for this year’s trade deadline. Make no mistake — six game winning streak or not, the Angels could struggle to staff the 300 or so more innings they’ll need out of the bullpen this year.

• Bugs and Cranks suggests Joe Mauer’s position will be an obstacle to batting .400. I wondered, though, whether it could actually help him. It hasn’t kept winning two batting titles, and to hit .400 you really want to have as few at bats as possible (while still clearing the minimum), since it’s obviously harder to hit .400 over 600 or 700 at bats. Combine his late start to the season with his position, and Mauer might be in the perfect situation to make a run.

I’m completely in agreement with you about Mauer, Sam. The combination of missed time and fewer at-bats as a catcher - it’s really the perfect situation for a run. Every serious “run at .400″ that I can remember seemed to peter out around mid-August, but Mauer starting his season late takes care of that. I assume that he will get enough at-bats to qualify - the only obstacle would be an injury, which you certainly can’t rule out. I get the idea of him being more prone to injury at catcher, but he’s more prone to too many at-bats at any other position. In addition - other than Albert Pujols, there is no other player that I wish the Angels would go all-out after when he’s a free agent (after 2011? I can’t remember) than Mauer. Such a great hitter. I’m envisioning it already - the Twins underachieve next year at the new outdoor stadium and half their home games get rained out, Mauer gets mildly hurt running the bases in a downpour the year after that which drives his price down a bit, he comes out to visit Torii in sunny SoCal, they go to lunch at Del Taco with Tony… done.
