Guerrero chasing even more this year

June 18th, 2009, 6:54 am · 3 Comments · posted by Sam Miller, The Orange County Register

Scioscia says Guerrero is pressing, and the stats seem to agree. He’s always swung at a lot of pitches outside the strike zone, but this year he’s hacking at 53 percent of balls, well above both his career average (38 percent) and his career high (46 percent). It’s certainly not his only problem, but it suggests that he might be trying to force himself out of this slump. As it goes, though, it seems to be pushing him further in, as he’s making contact with just 61 percent of those pitches — below his career average of 65 percent.

Ok fine Vlad is pressing, now what are Mike and Mick the stick doing to help him?

Answer- nothing, as they have always done with Vlad.

Are they giving him the take sign or telling him to be more patient?

Vlad’s approach needs to change, he’s not going to be able to handle pitches out of the zone he used to muscle into the outfield for singles. If Scioscia thinks he’s pressing, I want to see him dropped in the order so Rivera can go to work w/ risp. Other than a sub 90 mph fastball on the inner half from a lefty reliever … he hasn’t elevated anything hard this year.

I’m hoping he can find the power stroke and recognize that pitchers still will not throw him strikes. Take some pitches and find a groove, not close your eyes and swing so hard your titty gets torn.

At some point, the Angels need to realize Vlad is on the downside of his career, and he may never hit for big power numbers again. If that is the case, he becomes a liability since he can hardly run or play in the field and becomes nothing more than a singles hitter.
