I’m up in the Bay Area this week, where the Giants have a roster decision: Jonathan Sanchez’ move to the bullpen means Ryan Sadowski takes a spot in the starting rotation. Rich Aurilia was on bereavement leave so they didn’t have to send anybody down immediately, but that’ll change within a couple days. I don’t believe any of their relievers still have options, which means the Giants will likely have to cut a reliever to make room on the roster, and I’m wondering whether somebody is going to swoop in and make a trade for Brandon Medders (3.13 ERA) or Justin Miller (2.27 ERA). Or, if they can take on salary, Bobby Howry (3.86). We’ve heard that lots of teams are shopping for relievers and nobody is selling yet, but Miller and Medders (and probably Howry) could help a team like the Angels. Jonathan Sanchez might be available, too, though he’s been struggling and the Giants might not want to sell low on such a dynamic arm. The Giants could really use an infielder. There might be something here for the Angels.
The problem with your scenario Sam, is that those are not 8th inning guys. We need a guy to pitch the 8th. All any of those guys do is send Jepson back to the minors, but they don’t really improve our bullpen. What infielder would they have to give up to get a big-league pitcher? Kendrick, Wood, Rodriquez. That is not a good trade for the Angels. In my opinion.
