Foxsports.com’s Dayn Perry looked at five players that seem likely to be on the
move this month or next, before the trade deadlines.
I will take a look at them, too, and see how each might be a fit with the Angels — or not.
1. Cliff Lee, LHP, Indians — Imagine what a 22-game winner and reigning Cy Young Award winner will cost? Just like Dan Haren, a major-league ready starting pitcher and some of the organization’s top prospects. I can’t see the Angels making this move, even if Santana’s latest comeback fails.
2. Matt Holliday, LF, A’s — Forget it, right now. Even if all you want is the draft-pick compensation when Holliday leaves via free agency. Juan Rivera is not taking a seat for this guy … or going, with his affordable cost certainty, to Oakland in a deal for him, heaven forbid. The Angels already have three starting outfielders plus Vladimir Guerrero for four spots. Turn the page, unless Holliday brings Coors Field with him to Anaheim.
3. Huston Street, RH closer, Rockies — Ok this guy could help, not by taking Fuentes’ job, but by taking the ball in the eighth inning. But I don’t think Colorado is in any hurry to move him, as long as the Rockies are in contention. Right now, somewhere on the road from Dodger Stadium to Pittsburgh and then Denver, Jim Tracy found a magic wand. Street’s staying as long as there is pixie dust in Colorado.
4. Jarrod Washburn, LHP, Mariners — Been there, done that, and now he makes too much money, even if it’s an expiring contract. No, he can’t come home again. The Dodgers or Phillies are more likely.
5. Doug Davis, LHP, Diamondbacks — Another expiring contract, but this guy is pitching really well right now. Might be the lesser of all five options here, talent-wise, but one that fits the Angels as a veteran No. 5 even if Santana is OK. I have to kick the tires on this one and haggle the price.
On Friday, I will offer some opinions of mine on improving the Angels.
Cliff Lee. Wow, that would be unbelievable. I would like to see the Angel rent pitchers down the stretch for the next couple of years. It’s not like guys like Brandon Wood are any use to us because they aren’t going to play. Turn them into front-line pitchers so we can match Lester-Beckett in the playoffs. That should be the only thing the Angels should be playing for right now.
The offense is what it is. Even if they get a power hitter, the Angels find a way to turn him into a slap hitter. Though, that to me, seems more like Teixeira lacking any true grit more than anything else.
