As usual, A’s general manager Billy Beane is already making moves before the end of July.

Picking up Scott Hairston (who has a .533 slugging percentage, by the way) from the Padres may not be a sign Beane thinks his team is capable of catching the Angels/Rangers this year. Hairston is under club control through 2011 and he’s relatively cheap ($1.5 million).

This might be the trade season for shrewd, under-the-radar moves. This one has that feel.
