
It’s official. After his second home run last night, Juan Rivera has now been worth $13 million to the Angels, more than the entire amount he’ll be paid for his three-year contract.
That’s according to the Wins Above Replacement metric and the average value of a win on the free agent market, both available at Fangraphs. Rivera has been nearly 15 runs better than the average Major League hitter, a surprising eight runs better than the average Major League defender, and 2.9 wins better than replacement level. Since a win typically costs $4.5 million on the free agent market, Rivera has been worth $13 million already. His contract calls for him to be paid $12.75 million over three seasons. So the Angels are playing with house money now, especially considering what the computers predicted.
He’s the first free agent signed to a multi-year deal this winter to earn his keep so quickly. The rest:
